Hotwire Hotel: 2.5* Chelsea/MSG area

I'm very new to bidding for a hotel, and searching for a bargain in NYC for 6/2-6/13.

I'm using Hotwire because there are 4 of us (my husband, myself, and our 2 teenagers)

Hotwire has only been showing $159 for a 3* as the lowest, but now I see this 2.5 * in Chelsea/MSG has popped up for $139, which is easier on our budget, especially since we're staying 7 nights. I'm wondering if it could be the Holiday Inn Express? It lists Complimentary Breakfast (yea!) and high speed internet as the only 2 amenities. We don't need lots of fancy amenities, just a clean, safe, decent place to stay, preferrably close to a subway.

**Edit: I just went back, they are also offering a 2.5* in the Central Park area, listed amenities are High Speed Internet and that it's a

"Boutique" hotel (is that an amenity? :) ) any ideas? it's listed for $119/night, great price!

I don't know if I should jump on this, or wait a little bit...

I've seen other people here getting some good deals, but I'm just not seeing those great deals!

Thanks for your help! :)

Welcome to BetterBidding :)

Can you please clairify your dates for the stay and we'll have a look at this.

Yes, our dates are 6/6/09 through 6/13/09.

I'm almost positive that the 2.5* in the Central Park area is The Marrakech Hotel, which I don't think I'm interested in, thanks to some reviews I've read. But, the one in the Chelsea/MSG area sounds more promising.

Thanks for your help.

The Holiday Inn Express was last reported as a 3* property so i don't think that is likely the 2.5* property you're being offered above.

No 2.5* has yet been reported to the board with this amenity combination, and there are no additional clues provided by HOTWIRE, so i don't have much of an educated guess. The Best Western Convention Center has previously been reported at the 2.5* level with the amenities above, but also with a Fitness icon, and while it's possible this icon has been removed, there is no evidence of such and this would just be speculation, so i don't have a high degree of confidence that this is the property you're seeing either.

Generally speaking we usually recommend sticking with at least 3* properties in NYC. What is your maximum budget? Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

Unfortunately, I'm afraid the $140 area is our max, not a lot, I know, but I keep seeing these great deals that other people are finding, so I still have hope. We are only interested in somewhere safe, clean, and convenient to the subway. A complimentary breakfast in nice, but not necessary. We don't plan to spend much time in our room, as there is so much to see and do!

I think that using PRICELINE to split our bid between two rooms would still top out our budget. (although the thought of two bathrooms is tempting, we have a 16 year old daughter!)

Thank you for the advice to stay 3* or above, also. I do worry that below that might have more problems in the cleanliness area. I've noticed, though, that the Pennsylvannia is rated 2*, I would have thought that it would be 3, yesterday there was a $143 listing there, on one of the "other" sites, but it's gone today. I like the idea of an historic hotel.

I will continue to watch HOTWIRE to see what comes up, as we still have about 4 weeks until our trip.

Again, thank you for your help.

And, I will be sure and go through the links here. I, for one, appreciate all the advice I've found looking through this board!

That property gets some really bad reviews

The idea of SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID is not to get two rooms but rather stay at two different hotels during the course of your stay... say one hotel for the first four nites and then a different hotel for the last 3 nites (or some similar combination). This can soemtimes help you get a better deal as you don't need one hotel with low rates for all 7 nites... you can stay at one "deal" hotel for the first leg of your stay... then move to the second hotel which is offering a deal for the second half of your stay.
