Doing some research on Santa Monica/Marina Del Rey for an upcoming trip. If the Doubletree is a suites hotel, why does the Suite icon not appear as an amenity? Given the choice is the Marriott MDR a significantly better property?

Hotels dont alway show all the amenities associated with their property... the best example is how almost all hotels (in the US) now offer hi-speed internet, yet you'll still see plenty of hotels on HOTWIRE (even at the 3* and 4* levels) that don't show an internet icon, even though the property offers that amenity.
