IndyDon Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 I stayed at this hotel 20 years ago on business when it was a Ramada and had a terrible experience. I checked Hotwire and knew the 3-star hotel they advertised was the Radisson. So, I decided to give it a try for a night when my family needed a place to stay for one night. Overall, the experience was very good. The biggest gripes I can come up with are the small bathroom, including a door that hits the toilet bowl, and pool towels that are abrasive rather than soft. Positive points for my family include WiFi throughout the hotel, morning paper delivered to room (I am not a Radisson member), good selection of cable channels, fridge in room, indoor and outdoor pools, and Starbucks on-site. The pool was about 80 degrees F which is great for a lap pool but cool for a family pool. Wireless network worked great in the room.Hotwire advertised a $61 a night 3-star hotel in Merrillville. From personal knowledge of Merrillville hotels I knew the Radisson should be the only one that would be rated 3-stars. I checked the amenities that included a restaurant on-site. That clinched it that it was the Radisson. So, I used Hotwire for the first time to book the room one day prior to our stay. The rate was $61 but the final charge, after fees and taxes, was just shy of $75. This is cheaper than the other hotels in the area which usually run $100 total ($89 base rate) for their lowest rates. If you really want a cheap hotel with no frill there is the Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn which are usually under $50 total. I have stayed at both of these discount hotels several times each and would so again if I really wanted to save money. The Radisson was a great bargain and I was very happy with myself when my relatives, also in town because of a funeral, told me they were all paying $89 a night or more (base rate). I would not hesitate in staying at the Radisson again if I could get a low rate.
