The National Restaurant Show is May 16-19, very large convention. Of course I want to score the best possible hotel at the lowest possible rate. Is it better to book now, or do downtown Chicago rates on Hotwire typically fall the closer you get to the show dates? Any help is appreciated and thanks!

You may get some last minute cancellations, but keep in mind this is probably one of the biggest conventions in Chicago during the year, so if rates drop, it probably won't be major. You would also be betting that rates drop, when that isn't guaranteed.

I do see a 4* for $169 in the NMA/WT/GC area on HOTWIRE with the amenities: Boutique Hotel, Fitness Center, Restaurant(s), Business Center, High-speed Internet Access, which may be a match for the Sutton Place (as that is a match on the Vacation Package side of HOTWIRE, in terms of amenities.) If this is actually the Sutton, that would be a terrific deal.

If you want to try PRICELINE, I'd start bidding for a 4* in the River North/NMA area at $125 and if that's not accepted, try $130, then $135, etc. You may have to go up to $150 (and possibly slightly higher, although if you're bidding $150 for a 4* and it's not being accepted, I'd just go with the HOTWIRE deal for $169.) given the prices I'm seeing.

Please update with your results - I'm looking for then too!

My "safety" is a 3-night reservation (buy 2 get 1 free night) at the James that I can cancel. That came to $251/night, and that hotel also pops up in HOTWIRE for $199 for your search. I may end up sticking with the $251 because (1) they know I'm bringing kids (if I put 2+2 on hotwire, it doesn't come up as a result); and (2) with a Leader's club membership (free to anyone), I'm eligible for a free upgrade on check in.

The Sutton Place just popped up for me tonight too, but at $174. The hotel website is $299, so that's a $75 discount (vs. only $50 for the James). That's a little more enticing.

Like I say, keep us posted here. Use the bidding PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to support the site.
