My wife and I did not enjoy our stay at the Clift. We ended up making lots of jokes about the highbrow staff and their snobby attitudes.

The rooms are very small, and very nicely furnished with great sheets, towels, robes, and furniture. The rooms are also very noisy. We had specifically requested a quiet room, but they put us on the floor right above the booming bar on the first night. We complained and got moved to a higher floor (not without a lot of attitude and no apology.) However, this room was also noisy. You could hear people walk by in the hallway and people talking in the room next door. We wrote a letter to the manager, but she did nothing. We won't stay here again, unless the rates come down to about $50. And even then, I'd be reluctant.

At least with Hotwire you can take precautions to avoid specific properties.

I think we have similar personalities (at least in hotels) as i remember my first stay at the W in New Orleans. I was reluctant to stay there and wasn't looking forward to it as i thought it too 'hip' and 'trendy' for my tastes, but the stay ended up being great and i would describe it as 'understated elegance' <which is nice>
