WFT Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Hi,My wife and I are arriving in New York on the 11th April and require a hotel from the 11th until the 16th - so for 5 nights. We've never been before and would welcome any help wrt the use of PRICELINE or HOTWIRE.What is the best strategy to use for the areas MTW, MTE, or Times Square? We would ideally like a 4 star hotel with good reviews and have a budget of around $130 a night. We would really appreciate any advice provided. Thanks
thereuare Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding! We would ideally like a 4 star hotel with good reviews...With PRICELINE you're subject to receiving any 4* hotel in the zone... there is no way to target only those with the best reviews (this isn't to imply that any are 'bad', but you need to be open to the possibility that you may receive a 4* property with reviews that don't meet your own expectations)If you'd prefer to take an educated guess as the property first adn thus be able to read reviews for the property you think you may receive, HOTWIRE may be a better option as you can often take a guess as to the hotel you will receive based upon the amenities and star rating associated with the property offered. Searching for a 4* hotel for your dates doesn't turn up anything at $130 or under, but just over your budget at $153/nite (your price may differ slightly), is a 4* property in the MTC zone with Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, and Spa icons. This is a match for previous reports for the Le Parker Meridien, which lately has gotten very good reviews, so that would be our best guess. So you need to decide if price is the most important factor (at which point PRICELINE is your better option) or having a guess as to what you will receive is more important (at which point HOTWIRE may be your best option)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. WFT Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 Thanks for your reply. I will take a look at the weekend and let you know how it went.
AaronJB Posted March 27, 2009 Report Posted March 27, 2009 Additionally, keep in mind with reviews of NYC properties that many of those people are paying full price - which can be far more than what you are paying via HOTWIRE or PRICELINE, and the difference may result in differing expectations. While someone may not have liked a hotel room for $300, how will you feel about the same room at, for example, $130? While it's good to be concerned with reviews, I'd keep in mind price point and worry only if reviews discuss bigger issues.
WFT Posted March 27, 2009 Author Report Posted March 27, 2009 Thanks for everyones advice. I decided to take the gamble/plunge and went via the PRICELINE link from this website (so hopefully you'll get the credit you deserve). In the end we managed to get the sheraton new york hotel and towers (Midtown West) for roughly $141.60 a night including taxes et all so I'm really chuffed. The bids I put in were $104, $112, $115 and finally accepted at $117.5 (these figures were obviously without the taxes, etc which is where the $141.60 figure came from). After the initial $104 bid they offered me a rate $128 so I based my offers on the information i read somewhere (probably on here) of going half way between the two. Thanks again everyone and keep up the good work.
thereuare Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 Congratulations on your success!Glad to see that you were successful within your budget and are happy with the results.Thank you for sharing your win with the board and using our PRICLINE link to begin your bidding.Enjoy your stay.
