Result was a bit of a surprise - looks like their icon combination has changed - thought that with this combination of icons we were likely to get either Omni Berkshire or Doubletree Metropolitan.

Sorry to hear you didn't receive one of the properties you were expecting, but lately HOTWIRE has been dropping/hiding an amenity or two based upon some criteria of the search, and it looks like this is a new combination to be associated with the W New York.

My brother in law stayed here a couple of years ago and really enjoyed his stay, but the big complaint with this property is room size... many are notoriously small. At check-in i would try to be as friendly as possible with the check-in clerk and say something along the lines of "I know the room size here differs greatly from room-to-room, and usually i don't care too much, but i'm going to be a guest here for a whole week, i'd appreciate it if you could help me out with a decent sized room". And while it shouldn't be necessary, nor do i think it's customary in NYC hotels, you may want to consider tipping the desk clerk, as per this Tipping at Hotels thread. (only suggest this as i know the hotel's reputation for small bedded rooms, and for a one week stay, a $20 tip may go a long way to improving your stay and only amount to less than $3/day... but you have to feel it out, it could also just be $20 'thrown away')

If you're not happy with the room assignment i would try to speak to a manager (calmy and politely) to get a better room assigned... NYC hotels are having enough trouble right now that they should want to be going out of their way to please customers.

Thanks for the tips at check-in time - we will have to see how we go.

I guess it is always going to be a bit of potluck as to which hotel you get - after all that's the point of a discounted rate - even with a decent amount of research. I'm sure the room will be significantly better than some hotels I've stayed at in the past!!!!
