I am aiming low because I have a couple of days to bid.

You're are doing a classic rookie misstake here! Let's say you can hit the 3.5* at $31, and you wone the 3* at $30. This is only an example. But if you decide to bid at a lower * level, also lower your bid at the same time. Or you can end up overpaying for a hotel. Sure, maybe this is no biggie for you but you get my point :)

Lower * star level = cheaper price most of the times. Have your budgett ready for each * level when you start to bid.

It's hard to help you without knowing your date(s) for the stay??
