I used the PRICELINE link, and the re-bidding options.

I needed to get 2 rooms for our Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights in New York City.

1. I bid $100 for 4* MTE, and it was rejected

2. I added another zone (without a 4* hotel - Chelsea, I believe) and then bid $111, and it was rejected

3. I added another zone (without a 4* hotel) and then bid $120, and it was rejected

4. Finally, on my fourth try (and adding another zone), I bid for $125/night, and it was accepted.

If you're interested in a 4* hotel in one particular zone in NYC, I would highly, highly recommend starting with a low bid, then working up with the re-bid strategy.
