One other question. My flight will arrive about 11:59 on 6/5. I assume I need 6/5 reservations even though I will probably not get to the airport before 1:00am 6/6. Is that correct?

My best guess for the 3.5* hotel is the Sheraton Portland Airport.

Check the amenities for the 3* hotel again by clicking Continue and then clicking "see all amenities" (located just below the amenity icons). You may need to increase the size of the window that opens (or reduce the type size). Do you see a Tennis Nearby icon as well? Also, does the following TripAdvisor information appear: 3.0 rating, 20+ customer reviews, last rated November 2008? If so, this is a match for the Radisson Portland Airport, so that would be my guess for this one.

Yes, you do need reserve a room for 6/5; otherwise, you won't be able to check in until the afternoon of the 6th.

I will also add that whatever hotel you receive you should call and let them know that you won't be arriving until after midnite and that you will be checking-in and to not release your room as a 'no show'. (ask them to put a note on your reservation) I would then also call the day of travel and let them know again.

Yes, when I look at the "all amenities: link "tennis nearby" does appear. (As an aside, I could not reformat or resize the pop-up window, I had to print it to see everything).

But, when I look at the trip advisor it does say a 3.0 rating, 20+ reviewers, but the latest is January 2009.

Still look like the Radisson? I kinda hope so, that is the one I would like to get.

With Hotwire is it better to book as far out as you can, or to wait until closer to the trip to see if prices change, hopefully in the down direct?

There is no rule for "best time to buy", but the best course of action is to research prices so you know what "good deal" is... then if one presents itself take it.
