melwillz Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 HI guys,I have read through all the help topics and found that it may be possible to get the W hotel on hotwire for a decent price. The rates I am looking at on Expedia and similar sites for my dates at Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea, Hilton Garden Innn Tribeca or Park South Hotel are between 150-170 per night including going direct through the hotel.I am happy to pay between 100-120 usd per night for the 8 night stay. Can anyone give me any help on bidding on hotwire or priceline and hopefully gettting any of these hotels at a cheaper price?Promise to post to the calender if i do go down this route!Thanksmelanie
melwillz Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 Sorry I forgot to mention that the trip is half for business and half for leisure. If I can get something closeish to broadway between 10th and 11th or Union Sq that would be great.Have previously stayed at Park South hotel twice before.
thereuare Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding!Few things to cover...Can anyone give me any help on bidding on hotwire or priceline and hopefully gettting any of these hotels at a cheaper price? There is no bidding on HOTWIRE, nor can you bid on a specific hotel with PRICELINE.If you're only looking for one of the specific hotels above, PRICELINE is probably not a good option since you can't bid on a specific property. If you're flexible in the hotel you receive, as well as with teh exact location, PRICELINE can be a great option for which i do think you can do better than the prices you're quoting above. However, looking at PRICELINE's zones, you'll need to be able to accept a hotel anywhere within the shaded boundaries of the zone(s) you select at the minimum star level you choose. If PRICELINE is too broad for you HOTWIRE may still be an option as you can often identify the properties beforehand based upon the star level and amenities shown before your purchase, thereby have an educated guess as to the hotel and its location. If you haven't seen it yet, this is a good thread to get started: I've Never Used Priceline or Hotwire.Let us know your thoughts and/or questions regarding the above and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. melwillz Posted February 22, 2009 Author Report Posted February 22, 2009 Thanks for the tips. I do understand you can't bid on hotwire, and it does seem like that site gives you a better indication of what hotel it is.What I would like is something close to Union Sq, Tribeca or Empire State that is not going to cost me an arm and a leg. If i can get a 4* hotel for under 120 I will be cheering. It's an 8 day stay. Do you recommend splitting it up and seeing what I get?Right now on hotwire for my dates (entire 8 night stay) I can see a 4* in Downtown Soho for $110 per night. Amenities are fitness centre, pool, restaurant, business centre, and high speed internet.Any idea what this would be? Trip advisor rating 4 out of 5 and 520+ reviews.Really keen to find out biding stretegies! Thanks so much for your help.Mel
AaronJB Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 My only concern with the Downtown 4* is that it's likely the Millennium Hilton, which is rather far South. There is a 4* in the Midtown East area on HOTWIRE with the amenities fitness, business, restaurant, internet, tennis for $139, which would appear to be either the Intercontinental or Grand Hyatt. If you would like to try for either (although you may get something else) on PRICELINE, I would recommend starting at $105 for a 4* in Midtown East, and if that isn't accepted, bumping up to $110 24 hours later. The 4*'s in MTE are probably more likely to accept a bid under $120 than the Midtown West areas. If you want to try for the Millennium Hilton on PRICELINE, I would bid for a 4* in the Downtown/Financial area for $85. If that isn't accepted, try $90 24 hours later. If you *do* want to split your stay, you could spend half the time in the downtown area at the Millennium Hilton, then half in Midtown via a PRICELINE bid.If any of these ideas are of interest, please start your purchases via the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links. Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions.
melwillz Posted February 22, 2009 Author Report Posted February 22, 2009 Thanks so much, that is excellent advice. I did look on trip advisor and worked out it is probably the millenium hilton, and it looks good but quite out of the way.I'm trying to get close (ish) to broadway between 10th and 11th, but it's kind of impossible to get a 4 star in Chelsea or Empire state building areas on hotwire.I guess I could risk it with the numerous 3 stars, and hope that is is the Hilton Garden Inn or similar.I think I'll try the priceline strategy you suggested in MTE for a 4* and see how I get on.Slightly worried about splitting the trip in half, although I can see advantages.
melwillz Posted February 22, 2009 Author Report Posted February 22, 2009 One more quick question. Is there really that much difference between a 3-3.5* in say Chelsea/Madison Sq Garden or MTE area than a 4* in MTE?When actually Chelsea is closer to the office I will be visiting??I would like something nice, and there appears to be a lot of new hotels in the Chelsea area.If I can get a 3-3.5* property at say 80-100 USD per night that would suit me fine. Then I can spend the savings on my ski trip to Tahoe :)Thanks so much again for all the great help and advice.
thereuare Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 The 4* MTE hotel appears to be a match for the Inter-Continental Barclay, which assuming is correct, is just a short walk to the 6 train which will take you to the Astor Place Station (8th St) and about a half block to Broadway. If you need to be around 10th-11th Street and Broadway, why do you feel that Chelsea is the most convenient? How do you intend to do most of your commuting from hotel to office? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. melwillz Posted February 22, 2009 Author Report Posted February 22, 2009 It looked like I would be able to walk from the Hilton Garden Inn from W28th Street in Chelsea.I am very happy getting the subway every day if I have to. I have previously walked from Murray Hill to Century 21 and had no problems walking all the way back again. I do love to walk. What I don't understand is how the 3 and 3.5* hotels can get better reviews on TA than the 4 * in MTE. The Hyatt and the Intercontinental in MTE get reviews past 150 and a lot of complaints about noise from other rooms and the street. Are these people just whingers?I am quite noise sensitive, but have never had a problem at the Park South. I am guessing people on a lower budget have lower expectations that someone who typically stays in a 4*? The noise complaints were a mixture of Priceline and normal paying guests.Do you guys have a bunch of "best" NYC 4* that is possible to win on Priceline? Any area in NYC. I am still wanting to do 4 nights in the Millenium HIlton if I can score that one (or whatever I score), and split it up with another area of NYC.I might add I am not the complaining type. I've only ever asked to move rooms in a hotel when something is broken or if it smells like smoke.
melwillz Posted February 23, 2009 Author Report Posted February 23, 2009 ** update.I won Millenium HIlton 13th March to 17th March for $105 USD per night and am very very happy with this. I do not mind being in the financial district at all. That is a great rate and thankyou SO much to everyone for all your advice.I'll deal with the other 4 nights I need when I get there.Started at 85 like suggested and worked my way up adding different zones as I went.
