datickner Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Hi all,This is my first post on here, so hello!I have booked the Shelburne Murray Hill on Feb 11th, for 5 nights, fo myself and my girlfriend for our first trip to NYC. We will be in NYC for Valentines Day, and cannot wait.I got a rate of $139, for what they call a 'studio suite'.Now I have seen that people are getting very good rates for The Benjamin on here. Is it worth me bidding on here for these dates, to try and get a better hotel / a bit cheaper? What do people think?Thank you!
AaronJB Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Welcome to the site. :)You do have a few options to consider:1. Attempt bidding for a 4* in MTE on PRICELINE in an attempt to get the Benjamin. However, keep in mind with Priceline, if you bid for a 4* in a zone such as MTE, you could potentially get any of the 4*'s in that zone - don't count on getting the Benjamin, just because many others have gotten it recently. PRICELINE is not the way to go if you're set on a specific hotel.2. HOTWIRE has a 3.5* in the Midtown East area with the amenities Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Tennis for $127, which would appear to be a match for the Millennium UN. While not the most central location, the hotel is well-reviewed.3. The Affinia 50 is $184.70 on Orbitz.com (25% off). Use coupon code 20HOTEL for an additional 20% off, bringing this down to about $148; while this would be a few bucks more per night, it is a very well-reviewed property that would be a more upscale choice than the Shelburne Murray Hill.4. The Tudor Hotel is $152 via Orbitz.com. Use coupon code 20HOTEL for 20% off = about $121.60 per night (a total of 60% off.)Please use the site's links to HOTWIRE, PRICELINE, Quikbook.com or Orbitz, and let us know if you have any questions.
AaronJB Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Additionally, you can also consider bidding on other Midtown areas, but it's a matter with PRICELINE of being flexible and willing to accept what you may get.In terms of bidding for a 4* in Midtown areas, I would start low - $90 - and then if that is not accepted, bid $95 24 hours later.
datickner Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 Hi again everyone...Thanks for all your help previously... I am seriously thinking of bidding on here for a hotel. I still have my reservations at the Affinia 50 and Shelburne, but people on here seem to be getting ridiculously low prices, and with the terrible exchange rate for us people in UK, I am thinking of bidding for a 4* on here in an attempt to save some money and have more to spend in NYC.My current reservations are for $139 and $161 a night, so if I could get something for $110, for 5 nights, I am going to be saving a decent amount. So my question is, if i was to bid on priceline for a hotel in MTE, in the hope of getting the Benjamin / Grand Hyatt... when would you start bidding?I know I am not guaranteed any hotel, but I think as long as I save money I will be happy with any of the MTE hotels. We are flying out on Feb 11th, so when would you start bidding for a hotel? As soon as possible? Many thanks again
datickner Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 Apologies for not replying to the personal message, I have now done so, and will definately use any links in this site to make my booking :-) ...
AaronJB Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I'd start at $100; if that's not accepted, up to $105 24 hours later, $110 24 hours after that if $105 isn't accepted. Please use the site's PRICELINE link to start your bidding.
datickner Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 Ok, many thanks. Can I re-bid if I add areas with no 4*? I am after a 4* and I understand you can re-bid if you alter your bid, so if i add some non 4* areas, could I re-bid $110 immediately? Many thanks
AaronJB Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 You can re-bid if you want (although you have enough time before your trip to just bid again in 24 hours), using areas that do not have 4* properties. Read re-bidding explained here: Priceline Re-Bidding Explained
datickner Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 Excellent, thanks again for your help
AaronJB Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 No problem; let us know how it goes and if you have any questions.
datickner Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 Hi all,I started my bidding at $90 for MTE - rejected...$100 for MTE and Chelsea was rejected$110 for MTE, Chelsea and Upper East Side was rejected$111 for MTE, Chelsea, Upper East Side and Brooklyn was ACCEPTED :-)Delighted with the rate of $111 esp over Valentines Day. I had hoped for the Grand Hyatt or Benjamin, but The Barclay does look lovely too.Cant wait to go.Thanks to all for your help on here. I booked through your PRICELINE links and couldnt have done it without you! :-)
AaronJB Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Thank you for using the site's PRICELINE link and I'm glad you were successful with re-bidding. This is a stellar deal for a very nice (and quite well-located) property. In terms of a valentine's day property, I'd think this would be more appropriate for this occasion than the Grand Hyatt.Enjoy your stay. :)
datickner Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 Thank you very much again :-)
