MissPoofy Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 I'm finally taking a mini vacation that will be of complete leisure. I want to stay at the best, while paying far less. (Wishful thinking)Any advice for the Milwaukee area? Yes, I am very prepared to begin my search at the links for Priceline and Hotwire that Thereyouare or Aaron will provide :)Cheers,MissPoofy
AaronJB Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 Good morning. :)What are your dates of travel?Milwaukee doesn't have any 5*'s.You may want to compare what the prices are like for 4*'s in Chicago vs. Milwaukee for your dates of travel. If you are going to Milwaukee for a specific reason, that's great, but if you are going to Milwaukee for a hotel stay, you could probably find a good deal in the Chicagoland area (there are likely some very reasonable 3.5-4* hotels in the nearby South burbs, such as Oak Brook) and not have to drive all the way to Milwaukee.
AaronJB Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 You could see if the Intercontinental O'Hare is available for your dates. That's a new property with an art gallery inside (with a full-time curator, no less.)

I'm quite sick of it. I need a break but can't afford a huge vacation both financially and time wise. I've never been to Milwaukee, so I don't know what to expect. Dates of travel will ideally be next weekend, but the following weekend is also fine. If you have any suggestions outside of Illinois but within about a 2 hour drive, I'm all ears. I really wanted to rent a condo/lodge in a ski resort atmosphere that has a private hot tub outside (on a deck or balcony). My abilities to locate one for a one night rental are not good.Thank you for your assistance so far. I believe you live near me Aaron, so I really appreciate your help and knowledge :)
MissPoofy Posted January 17, 2009 Author Report Posted January 17, 2009 Your Offer Price Per Room, Per Night: $38.00 Subtotal: $76.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $18.57 Total Charges*: $94.57 I tried for 4 star but gave up once I was approaching 60 dollars a night. AaronJB Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 Happy to help! :)I definitely understand about wanting to get away from the area a while. If you're looking for a stop at a local institution on the way up towards Milwaukee, there is the Brat Stop (http://www.bratstop.com/), which is right off the route 50 exit on I-94.If you have a lot of time, you may want to take a side trip to Lake Geneva (http://www.lakegenevawi.com/), which is a very pretty resort town sort of on the way (i-94 up to route 50, then West on 50 for about 35-40 minutes or so.) In the Summer, the nearby town of Burlington hosts Chocolate Fest (Nestle has one of their production facilities in Burlington.) Lake Geneva isn't essential viewing (if you don't have much time, it can definitely wait till some other time), but it's a very pretty - and extremely popular in the Summer - town, and worth considering for a future getaway. The Brat Stop, however, is definitely recommended if you're hungry and passing by - it is just off the expressway (unlike Lake Geneva, which is a bit of a drive from the exit.)There are also a few good outlet malls around the route 50 exit, as well.If you want to venture further up into Wisconsin in the Spring/Summer/Fall, I'd highly recommend considering the Wisconsin Dells, which is sort of like if an amusement park ate a small town - the whole place is amusement parks, water parks, mini golf, arcades and other similar attractions. Near the Dells is the gorgeous Devil's Lake State Park. It's best to drive to the Dells, but Amtrak does stop there, as well. Door County - although not at this time of year at all - is also another area of Wisconsin I'd highly recommend. To the Southwest of Chicago, there's Starved Rock Lodge at the Starved Rock State Park (http://www.starvedrocklodge.com/), which is gorgeous in the Summer and Winter. That's about 90 minutes SW.I haven't been to Milwaukee in ages, but their art museum is supposed to be superb. In terms of condos/cabins, you may want to check out vrbo.com (Vacation Rental by Owner) for Lake Geneva or Door County (although no to Door County in the Winter; colder than Chicago.)These deals are also available for Wisconsin Resorts for $99, but they are both about 75-95 minutes North of Milwaukee.http://hotels.travelzoo.com/chicago-hotels/518836http://hotels.travelzoo.com/chicago-hotels/514800Sadly, there's not a ton of "nearby getaway" options for Chicagoans.

MissPoofy Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 Aaron,Wow, thank you for such a thorough list! I will be referring to it often, especially during the spring and summer when the weather is better.Thereuare,Thank you :)
flyer7 Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 MissPoofy,Suggest you read the following review before traveling to the Hyatt, to minimize potential frustration. Don't let Priceline connection stop you from asking for a room that meets your needs.Milwaukee Hyatt Regency
MissPoofy Posted January 23, 2009 Author Report Posted January 23, 2009 flyer7,Thank you for the link. I guess when I check in, I'm just going to demand (nicely) for a renovated room. It doesn't matter what price you pay, 1 dollar, or 1,000. The hotel makes a contract that you will receive 3.5* accomodations. If I get a non-renovated room with a lobby that is completely a mess, I will ask for a refund, and I am 100% confident that I will recieve it. That's the nice thing about Priceline and well worth their 7 dollar fee. (I think it is still 7 dollars, not sure). I see we'll be staying at the hotel at the same time. Maybe we'll see each other at the bar or around the war-zone lobby. Cheers my friend!MissPoofyoops- just saw that you made your reservation for your brother. Maybe I'll see him around. :)
