retfar Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Actually, it's been identified as Wyndham Garden Chelsea. It's on a couple of previous recent threads. :)

UT3 Posted January 10, 2009 Author Report Posted January 10, 2009 2 adults/2 children (both 13) - we've never been to New York and would like to stay in an area central to most of the must see sights - any suggestions on a zone would be greatly appreciated!
thereuare Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 What is the quad occupancy rate (2adults/2chidren) that HOTWIRE is offering? Also, there is so much to see/do in Manhattan, that nothing is central to 'all the sites', but if you let us know what you intend to see/do during this stay we'll at least try to make sure that most of what you want to do is conveniently accessible. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. UT3 Posted January 10, 2009 Author Report Posted January 10, 2009 For some reason when I selected the option to "watch this trip" it reverts to double occupancy, which is currently priced at 144.00 - I went ahead and reentered all information including the children and the current price is 159.00. As for what we plan on doing - Empire State Bldg, Central Park, Times Square, a Broadway show, MoMa, shopping in SoHo, Statue of Liberty - the works! We plan on staying for 9 days, but because of travel we are limited to 7 days for sightseeing and taking in as much of Manhattan as possible. Because we will not have a rental and in effort to minimize cab fare - we probably won't visit the Brooklyn zoo - which also something I'd really love to experience.... any transporation recommendations.
AaronJB Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Personally, I'd recommend getting up as early as possible, as there's an energy to NYC in the early morning hours that I thought was enjoyable to soak in. Maybe it's just me, but I liked Times Square most at about dawn, when all the lights are on against the early morning sky and there's not too many people around.Walking shoes - best method of transit. I don't mean that to sound harsh, just personally when I've been to NYC, I prefer to just get into the atmosphere of the various neighborhoods and come across little shops rather than subwaying across town. If you need to, definitely take the subway. However, I recommend wearing some serious walking shoes and seeing as much of the city as possible on foot. I walked 15 miles in one day on my last visit, and I'm not the most athletic of people - I'm not sure I'm even up to the level of least athletic - but when you're walking in NYC, it's easy to get further when you're into exploring the city and don't realize how far you've ventured.A "must" that I recommend to everyone going to NYC is the Intrepid Museum, which is a giant Naval Aircraft Carrier that has been turned into a museum, and which sits on the Hudson River. Not only is the museum itself fascinating, but the experience of standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier and getting remarkable views up and down the river is remarkable. There's also some sights that you can take in relatively quickly (the Flatiron Building, for example.) I think 7 days is really very good in terms of getting a lot done. I was able to get the main things on my list done last time in 5 days.As for hotel, I think the potential Wyndham Garden Chelsea (3* ESB) on HOTWIRE is pretty good; it's not too far from Times Square, and it gives you a head start (although there's still a trek) if you're walking South towards Soho/Downtown sights. The Flatiron Building is essentially around the corner from that hotel. Not sure what your thoughts are on splitting your stay between hotels, but I do see a deal for "Stay 4 Nights, Get 2 Free" at Starwood hotels here:Stay 4 nights, get 2 freeClick on the above link, then search for 7/16-22 for New York City. One of the hotels should be the Westin Times Square - select that, and then search for a room with 2 adults. One of the options should be a room w/2 beds for $329 for the first four nights, last two nights free = $219 average per night. This is a non-refundable promo. You could do the HOTWIRE 3* ESB that's the potential Wyndham Garden for the other 3 nights. If the HOTWIRE deal is the Wyndham Garden Chelsea, the retail price for these dates is $269 on Expedia.com.Please use the site's link to HOTWIRE if you decide to book.
thereuare Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 .... any transporation recommendations.Get an unlimited 7 day metrocard which allows you unlimited use of all the subway and busses (except express busses which are basically commuter buses to Brooklyn/Queens anyway). You don't need, or want, a rental car in Manhattan... and you coudl get to the Bronx Zoo via mass transit as well, so no need to cross that off your list if that's something you'd like to do.
