Bidding for 5* Strip North 24th-27th January.

Counter-offers are of course nothing new, but usually a counter offer is within $20 or less of the initial bid. With a bid of $80, I got a counter offer of $130/night.

Just thought that it was interesting that the counter-offer was so much higher, more than 50% higher than the original bid. I've never seen a counter offer this high before.

I am wondering if it is because 2 of the nights are off-peak, but one of the nights is peak (weekend). I am looking at splitting up the stay (although this can be risky of course) and will update if more information.

Seems very unusual to me. Usually, if you were that far off from being accepted, I would think you just wouldn't have your bid accepted and not get a counter-offer.

It also seems a little odd because one of the possible 5*'s in that area on the hotel list is the Trump, which is $142.66 on Orbitz for these dates (and you get a $50 credit and an upgrade) and if you use the coupon FABSAVE10, you get 10% off = about $128.40 per night - a couple bucks less than your counter offer of $130 (and plus the upgrade and credit via the Orbitz.com deal.)

HOTWIRE also has a 5* in the Center Strip with the amenities: Casino, Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Business, Golf, Tennis, Spa for $114 that would appear to be a potential match for the Wynn.

I have been bidding on 4* North Strip 1/15 - 1/18 for the past few weeks. I started at $33 and was rejected. I slowly increased every 2 (or so) days. Once I hit about $44, I have been consistently been offered a room for $77 per night each time.

Can you expect counter offers to ever change?

Thanks for the tips!!!

The Venetian is actually $139/night booking direct, so the $130 counter offer is really not that great. And like you mentioned, there are possible matches for Wynn and Trump (although I personally don't think the Trump is hitting the same standard as Wynn, Venetian et al).

As posted by Zandar as well, counter-offers representing over 50% increase from the amount originally bid.

I think it definitely must be a new strategy - previously counter-offers were within $20 or so, but for a counter offer to be 50% or 60% more than the original bid was never seen before (IMHO / AFAIK).
