Priceline Hotel: 4* San Diego (Downtown-Harbor Island) Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

I am planning to a weekend getaway with some friends from LA in San Diego, I'm from the East Coast. I was just wondering how far in anticipation is it best to start bidding on Priceline? I don't want to bid too early and pay more than what I would pay if I bid later, any suggestions??
