Priceline Hotel: 3* or 4* in Midtown 11/06 - 11/10

First time to New York with my wife for our 10th anniversary. Got a great flight from Toronto for $135 return. Probably want to stay in midtown but I am definitely open to suggestions (central park, soho) etc. Just want a nice hotel. Don't need a bellman but something decent. We'll be exploring the town mostly anyways, moma, broadway, shopping, etc

I've read about the 4* strategies and the 6 re-bid zones. What are the 2 rebid zones in the 3* strategy?

Also, based on your experience, for a first timer in new york, what area would you recommend and would a 3* strategy or 4* be better to get a hotel in a good location? Budget would be $250 max but the less the better of course.

Thanks in advance.

You need to know how to determone your re-bid zones yourself as they need to be checked before every bidding cycle to make sure nothing has changed... otherwise you can end up in an area you didn't intend. See this Priceline Re-Bidding Explained thread and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board... if you don't understand or are confused then post back and we'll break it down step by step for you.

Also, there is now 3.5* bidding thru PRICELINE, so you should also consider that as well and not just go from a 4* to a 3* without first trying 3.5*.

I would think that any midtown zone would work fine for your needs. We haven't confirmed all the star ratings since PRICELINE added the 3.5* bidding to the mix (we came along with a FULL re-evaluation of all of their hotel star ratings) but in the past when you entered the 3* level you began to get a few hotels which were a bit less convenient then others (ie- Millenium Plaza at the UN and the Beekman Tower... both certainly do-able, but a 10-15 minute walk to the subway). I've just researched and the Millenimum UN is now rated 3.5* and the Beekman is still rated 3*)

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly.

Thanks for the info. I will start out with the 4* hotel strategy that I have seen on other posts. I know that you need to check and make sure that their are no 4*'s in the rebid zone while you are doing it. I will let you know my success and will use your links.

OK. I think I want to stay in cps, mtw, TS or mte. In that order. I was trying a 3.5* and got to $210. I mixed up my strategy but ran out of zones. I did the bidding wrong, read one of the other postings incorrectly and ran out of choices. Did the rebid zones and checked on another page to make sure they didn't have any 3.5* I think I want a 3.5 or better but would stay in a 3* if it is in a good location. (ie. not the two you mentioned from mte that are 10-15 min walk from subway)

What does shutting down the browser do?

I think I would like to try 4* first. then 3.5* again and then 3*. Max would be $250 plus taxes.

thanks in advance

Thanks.

Tried the 4* method but no offers. I guess I will try a 3.5* strategy. I would like to stay in the same areas. What are your opinions on MSG and empire state areas or financial? It's are first time so we will be doing a lot of walking and enjoying the sites.

Can you guide me on a 3.5* strategy?

As a first time visitor i would try to focus on staying in the Midtown zones so i would have no problem adding ESB or MSG to my bidding... but i would hold off on Downtown as it's a little bit 'out of the way'. It's certaily do-able if you ultimately do end up there in later bidding, but i would first try the midtown zones up to your limit and only try Downtown if you have exhausted your midtown options or can get a great deal down there to 'compensate' you for the less desirable location.

Let us know your zone thoughts and we'll take it from there.

Thanks again. Can we add the ESB and the msg. Should I try the 4* which would basically just add the esb area, and then try a 3.5* strategy? Can I try a 3.5* strategy right afterwards or do I need to wait the 24 hrs for that one?

Thanks again for all of your help. I will in the future use this service again as it is very useful. I found a deal on travelzoo and went with the Roosevelt at $179 for the weekend.

All the best!
