solsearcher Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Greetings. I am a total newbie here, but am traveling to NYC for business for 2 nights (9/23 and 9/24) starting TOMORROW. I have no reservations. My meetings will be at 500 Fifth Avenue, which is at 42nd and 5th. I would like to stay in a nice 3.5 or 4* property that is in safe, convenient walking distance. Character and charm (either historic or modern) are more important than big hotel amenities. Can you recommend a strategy? Thanks!!!By the way, I'll be reimbursed for the expense so I don't have a specific budget. Just don't want to pay more than I need to...
thereuare Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! While cost doesn't seem to be too much of a factor, if you've already searched you'll see that rates are quite high for these dates. One aspect that you have is that hotel star ratings with the opaque providers are often based upon amenities offered and you can't choose "historic or modern" so if you decide to use PRICELINE you'll have to choose a star rating and hope that you get something which meets your 'wants' in a hotel. As well, your location sits right near a three different PRICELINE zone boundaries, so while you may be able to choose any of these three zones, you could also potentially end up at the further direction from your desired location in the the zone. While i would think all would be walkable (coming from somebody who likes to walk) a few options may be a bit further than some would prefer.HOTWIRE becomes an option as you can often identify the property beforehand based upon the amenities shown, but for your dates ther are no 4* hotels offered and Manhattan hotels at your desired star rating start at $400+ (indicating just how expensive and 'tight' these dates are) and i think i have found an alternate option.GTA Hotels has the The Alex for $339/nite and the reviews are very good and seems to meet the hotel style you're seeking. I'd guess that this is about 10-15 minute walk to your location at 42nd and Fifth Ave.Would this work for your plans? If you go with the above please use our GTA Hotels. If you'd rather try to beat this price thru PRICELINE let us know and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow... if you go this route please use our PRICELINE link to begin your bidding. solsearcher Posted September 22, 2008 Author Report Posted September 22, 2008 Thanks so much! While I'm sure the Alex would work, and agree that it sounds like a good solution, I already panicked and contacted friends who invited me to stay with them.I really appreciate your efforts and suggestions and will be back before my next trip--hopefully with more advance notice!BTW, when I tried to edit (or delete) my post to say that I no longer needed assistance, I was told I didn't have permission. Yet I was logged in.Anyway, thanks again!
