canadarose Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 2 couples, planning a long weekend trip to NYC Nove 8-11, will be flying to EWR. We are planning to bid on Priceline, would prefer Midtown east or west, any chance of something decent if we start at $175 - willing to go up to $225 per room. Is bidding on 2 rooms more difficult? We are willing to stay outsidetheseareas, if there is a good transportation connection, and some restaurants/bars in nearby area. Would Flatiron/Gramercy be ok? or MurrayHill? Have gotten great advice on this forum before, and am eagerly waiting replies:)
thereuare Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 What is the minimum star rating you're willing to accept for this stay?Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
canadarose Posted September 13, 2008 Author Report Posted September 13, 2008 I hacn't even thought of the difficulty of getting 3 night in a row, but we would be willing to split it into 2 and 1, but not 3 singles. I've never stayed at a 2star, so I think 3 star would be the minimum. Because our stay is so short, location is very important. Have previously won Grand Hyatt and Intercontinental, was pleased with both.Is getting 2 rooms much more difficult? Is now a good time tostart bidding? Is $160 a reasonable place to start?
thereuare Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 As far as when to bid, see the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ.There are 'bars and restaurants nearby' just about everywhere in the city. For most, any of the midtown locations work out fine... MTE, MTW, CPS, TS, ESB, MSG, and Chelsea. However, at the 3* level there are some hotels which begin to get on the 'fringe'... with a 10-15 minute walk to the subway. Would this be acceptable? zigzagger Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 hey canadarose, i was able to bid $140 for 3 nights recently in NYC. it all depends on how much empty space is in the hotels. If there are no events/conventions going on chances are you can get a good deal - perhaps under $160. Sometimes though in my expetrience you have to wait pretty close to your travel dates to see if there is a deal. I have also found HOTWIRE a decent tool in looking at the dates you want to see if there are good deals- then you can re search those dates on PRICELINE and in most cases, get a hotel for an even lower price. hope this helps!
canadarose Posted September 14, 2008 Author Report Posted September 14, 2008 A 10 minute walk to the subway would be the max. I remember how tired we were at the end of the day. I'm going to start bidding tonight at $150. I haven't chosen a back-up yet, but am considering the Desmond Tutu. Also thanks for the Hotwire tip. I've never used it before. Also Thereuare- we no longer need to use the savingsbarn link?
thereuare Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 Please use our own PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links.A 10 minute walk to the subway would be the maxAt the 3* level there will be some hotels, especially in the MTE zone, which are a little more than 10 minutes from the nearest subway (first property which comes to mind is the Millenium UN Plaza)... do you want to exclude MTE from your bidding? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. canadarose Posted September 15, 2008 Author Report Posted September 15, 2008 No, I wouldn't eliminate MTE because of distance of Millenium UN Plaza. That would still be doable. Bidding last night- started at $160, went as far as $175. Tried for TS, MTW, MTE,CPS, and ESB. Tried 3 star only so far. I was thinking of trying 2.5 tonight , at least in MTW and ESB, as the 2.5s in these areas appear to be acceptable (have stayed at the Belvedere before) Have decided to split dates and am bidding now for Nov 9-11.
godwin Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 I am going to NYC arround the same time as well Nov 7 to Nov 10. I found a really good air fare from Toronto to JFK for only $130 US return. I need a hotel, having knowing hotels in NYC are expensive, I decided give priceline a try. Willing to go from $140-$225 max in the Soho, midtown east, midtown west, times square and empire state buildings area. What should I know about this time frame? is there any special events that may affect my bid? how much should I start bidding at? does $160 sound reasonable? Is this a good time to start bidding for that time frame? Also I am new to priceline, and this forum, I did some reading already and research and if I posted this in the wrong thread or forum please adv and move to right forum. Thx
canadarose Posted September 15, 2008 Author Report Posted September 15, 2008 Hi, sounds like you and I have similar goals, just to let you know, there are some extra fees with Priceline, and taxes in NYC aren't cheap, so consider this when making your bids. BTW, I've had great satisfaction in the past with Priceline, but you are right to wonder what is going on in the city at the time of your visit, as it can make a huge difference int the success of bidding. Good Luck!
godwin Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 just noticed that the presidental election is on Nov 4th, this might effect the bids, are any of the candiates going to throw parties in the NY area?

thereuare Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 For which set of dates did you bid the above?I assume you decided to lower your star rating to 2.5* (previously above you mentioned a 3* minimum)Outside of the opaque suppliers, what is the best deal you can find at an acceptable hotel thru traditional booking channels (use our BetterChecker to assist in your rate search)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.
