allbow Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Hi,I'm visiting NYC (9/26-9/28). I want a pretty cheap 2*, so I'm thinking the airports are a good place to look. My only worry is that maybe in Queens some hotels aren't too near subway stations. Airport shuttles would be fine but I'd rather not have to take a bus to the subway. Are the hotels *generally* close to subways (I don't need guarantees, I'd just like an idea)? Also there don't seem to be many reports about 2* hotels, so I'm not really sure where to start my bidding. I have a reservation at the Jamaica Clarion (134+ tax) as a backup. Thanks!!
thereuare Posted September 7, 2008 Report Posted September 7, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! Also there don't seem to be many reports about 2* hotels...There's a reason for this... we don't really recommend the lower rated hotels in this area or Manhattan. While some may be fine other may not be, and with the opaque providers you can't choose which type you will get. Can't really say how close the 2 star rated hotels will be to a subway, but you have to consider that a budget hotel would more likely be in a 'lower rent' area than a higher rated hotel and therefore somewhat further from the subway. You may want to stick with your back-up for at least you'll know what you're getting and distance from the subway, but if you want to try bidding anyway, let us know your maximum bid and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. allbow Posted September 7, 2008 Author Report Posted September 7, 2008 I think I'd like to try to bid anyway. I've changed my plans to only stay one night (9/27-9/28), and I'd just like to see how it works - I plan on going to NY periodically. My absolute upper bound is the reservation price ($134) no matter what the stars - it's actually pretty convenient to one of the friends that I"m visiting. I guess my upper bound for a 2* would be about $120, since I don't know what I'll be getting. Obviously I don't mind a higher star rating but I guess that will be difficult/impossible with my budget.
thereuare Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 Let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept. While a hotel in Manhattan may not be likely, would a hotel there be acceptable? If so, at least you could use them as additional bidding zones (and maybe you'll even get lucky)Let us know and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. allbow Posted September 8, 2008 Author Report Posted September 8, 2008 Sure! Anywhere in Manhattan. I can add Manhattan zones? (I thought there was some separation between Queens and Manhattan biddings but - what do I know.)
allbow Posted September 8, 2008 Author Report Posted September 8, 2008 Sorry, I should have specified the Queens zones: I think I'm down to Elmhurst and Laguardia. Also Long Island City would probably work. And again, anything in Manhattan (ha ha).
thereuare Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 I thought there was some separation between Queens and Manhattan biddingsThere is and there isn't depending upon the zone...The LGA and (Elmhurst - Corona) zones are togehter, but separate from...the Manhattan and Long Island City zones (which are together)Which would you like to begin with? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. allbow Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 Hi,so after a lot of work I got the 2.5 star Laguardia Airport Hotel (formerly a Wyndham) at 110.I did the following:I followed (more or less) the above strategy except I started at 70 and stopped at 110. I decided that I would rather try my luck in Queens before going higher. Then I tried my own strategy (don't know if it was a good idea or if I could have done better).2 star ELM 602 star LGA 602 star ELM + LGA 652.5 star LGA 702.5 star LGA + ELM 752.5 star LGA + ELM + BAY 80and kept increasing (waiting a day in between) until I got accepted.I think I missed a trick with the rebid zones? But anyway it looks like what I wanted. Saved $25.
