peterpan Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 I'm trying to get a relatively cheap hotel in the Boston copley/downtown area. I've tried bidding 2.5*+ for 70, 80 and 85 without success. Do you have any advice?
thereuare Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! There is no "Downtown" zone no PRICELINE... exactly which zone(s) did you bid?As cheap, especially in large cities, is a relative term, what is your maximum bid for this stay?Lastly, what are the dates of your stay? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 sorry, I thought I put my dates - Nov 21 - Dec 1. I bid the Copley/theater zone, and I'd like to be under $100. But, I'd add a zone or two if I could get it for less and knew I would be on a subway line. Thanks
thereuare Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Is the (Quincy Market - Faneuil Hall - Financial District) an option? Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 9, 2008 Author Report Posted September 9, 2008 Splitting is not a reasonable option for us.I'm not sure about the other sites. We need to able to get to and from Copley place easily and quickly, including a very late night return. However, we may now be 3 instead of two, so we may try an apartment. I won't know that unitl Friday.
thereuare Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Bump this thread on Friday once you have confirmed your plans. If you'll be triple occupancy, note that HOTWIRE is still an option as they allow you to search for up to quad occupany. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 15, 2008 Author Report Posted September 15, 2008 Hi,We're now going to be 2. If we were 3, I had a great deal on an apartment.
thereuare Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 We need to able to get to and from Copley place easily and quickly, including a very late night return. Not sure if you've been to Boston before, but the subway system is pretty good and you can probably get between the downtown areas (Copley and Quincy) fairly easily, as well, taxis aren't that expensive. However, since you have a late nite planned at least one of of your nites, note that the train system is not 24 hours and shuts down (i forget what time, but sometime between midnite and 2am or so)Given this is a 10 nite stay, if you could save $15 by adding an alternate zone, that's $150 savings over the course of your stay... which would certainly pay for a few cab rides. Is there a specific location in the Copley zone that you need to be?Given you've already been rejected up to $85 are willing to go up to $100 now (or was an $85 bid your maximum and $100 was your "all-in" price including taxes and fees)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 16, 2008 Author Report Posted September 16, 2008 Hi,I think we could deal with something on the subway line, but not too far away, since we're going to be hauling in and out of there with not a lot of lead time in either direction. Adding an hour (1/2 each way) onto an already packed schedule might be too much. We'd like to stay around $85, but I'm not sure that's possible. I think we're willing to go up to $90. We know we can pick up the downtown doubletree for 105 without bidding. We need to be at 110 Huntington - which I think is the Westin.
thereuare Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 We need to be at 110 Huntington - which I think is the Westin.110 Huntington is the Marriott at Copley... does that sound correct?I think we could deal with something on the subway line, but not too far awayWhen using the opaque services your hotel can be anywhere within the zone... you can't choose "close to a subway" as a criteria and won't know the location of the property until after your purchase. It's a compromise between price and choosing the hotel/location....since we're going to be hauling in and out of there with not a lot of lead time in either direction. Adding an hour (1/2 each way) onto an already packed schedule might be too much.Subway may not be the best bet... can i ask exactly what you're doing and/or hauling? We'd like to stay around $85, but I'm not sure that's possible. I think we're willing to go up to $90. We know we can pick up the [url;=http://www.hiltonlinks.com/link.asp?id=20110&hotel=BOSCODT]Doubletree Downtown for 105 without bidding. How are you able to get that rate... i'm showing the best rate of $249/nite on their websitePlease use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 Hi,Could be the Marriott, they are right next to each other. I think it's the Westin I need to get to.I know you can't choose location, but some locations in Boston are never too far from a subway. We're just "hauling" ourselves - and we don't mind walking a bit. But we're going to an event that requires us to be at the Westin (maybe Marriot) from about 12:30 to around midnight every day.Site I found was AtlasChoice.com, which quoted 1120 as the total price for 10 nights (I'm pretty sure that included tax.)
thereuare Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 I see that rate and it's almost too good to be true, imo.I would consider finding out the room type, booking the same room type directly at a refundable rate on the Doubletree Website... then making a claim for the best rate guarantee. If the BRG is honored you'll get a $50 gift card as well as know that you have a 'real' reservation with the hotel... i'm just a little concerned with the third party in this instance since they're located overseas so any problems may be very difficult to correct and the rate seems too far off the mark for my comfort level.I know you can't choose location, but some locations in Boston are never too far from a subway.Do any of the PRICELINE zones qualify that you'd be comfortable receiving a hotel anywhere within the given zone? If so, which one(s) and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Posted September 17, 2008 Certainly, I'm comfortable with the Copley Square - theatre site - and tried $75, 80 and 85 there before joining this forum. I suspect the 3* in Cambridge would all be suitable and I'm not sure about the quincy market area.As far as the doubletree rate - I've seen a similar rate at a few other sites, but didn't write them down. (I'm sure one of the other ones was also british.)
thereuare Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I would think the commute would be easier from Quincy than it would be from Cambridge... have you looked into which subway stations are near the location you need to be and then which subway lines run (and many stations there are) in the Cambridge and Quincy zones? I could be wrong, but i can't see the Cambridge zone being more convenient than the Quincy zone... if you end up North of the River how would you intend to commute to your location each day? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. peterpan Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 If we're too far to walk, we'll commute on the T. Green line stops at Copley - which is exactly where we need to be.
thereuare Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 You know your plans better than we do, so we'll start with your zones of Copley and Cambridge (i think that's what you want to bid on)...At the 3* level you have THREE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3* Copley...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $75, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $78, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Cambridge...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $75, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $78, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use our link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* Copley and Cambridge...Bid $83, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $85, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $88, if rejected add re-bdi zone...Bid $90Any questions feel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. peterpan Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 2 Star hotel rejected for copley at 85, may have found something outside PRICELINE for 89
thereuare Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Care to share?... if it's a good deal perhaps others will be interested in the future for their own Boston trips. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
peterpan Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 Always happy to share! The Best Western Round???? had an $89 suite. The only problem is that it's not near public transportation. Not sure what we're doing yet. I think we're going to try to bid 88 and 90 in downtown then make a decision on our next move - very complicated when you're dealing with a roommate who lives in another state and just splitting a room.
thereuare Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 While this Best Western is what i'd consider to be outside of 'downtown' boston, they do offer shuttle service to Copley Square (and maybe to the location that you need to be daily)... i'd call them to find out the shuttle schedule and what locations you can get dropped off at to see if it's convenient for your needs. (i'd also inquire as to how much a taxi is from downtown to the hotel as there will be times you'll just be too tired to wait for the shuttle)If you do go this route please note that we're an affiliate of the Best Western and please use our links (in this post or the support page) to begin your purchase.Let us know what you ultimately decide or if we can be of further help. peterpan Posted September 22, 2008 Author Report Posted September 22, 2008 I went to see if it would display the same rates, and I couldn't get to the site through your web page. Did I do something wrong?

peterpan Posted September 23, 2008 Author Report Posted September 23, 2008 Link works. I was doing all kinds of other silly things to try to get there!
peterpan Posted September 23, 2008 Author Report Posted September 23, 2008 Wound up bidding Waterfront area for $73 on the advice of a friend - got the Boston Renaissance
thereuare Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Congratulations on your win and thank you for sharing it with the board. This looks like a very nice rate for a 3* property in Boston, however, i was recently in this zone and it is a bit 'remote'. Taxis weren't too bad but your only real option for transporation in this area is the Silver Line so to get to the "Downtown" area you'll likely need to tranfer at least once. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay.
