Hotwire Hotel: Family of 4 NYC, 9/18-9/20

We are travelling with our two daughters (11 and 12), we are hoping to travel to NYC either in late July or early August. I would like to book only one room, somewhere in the midtown area, for 3 nights, preferably under $300 (or less) per night. What are our options? I can't safely use PriceLine, but I can use HotWire, correct? Any suggestions?

Given the sharp variations in hotel prices in NYC, it's difficult to give any specific recommendations without dates.

Priceline for a family of four is generally not recommended in major cities (you may have better luck in smaller markets), although this is especially true in NYC, where many rooms are very small.

HOTWIRE does guarantee bedding for four. While that's usually two beds, it could also mean a bed and a sofabed.

If you can provide specific dates, I would be happy to make some recommendations for hotels. With a budget of $300 and flexibility in dates, we should really have no problems finding you and your family something very nice for the money.

The deal that I found that is so good I almost can't believe it is the New York Palace Hotel for $276 via Travelocity.com for 7/25-28. That is an insanely low rate for one of New York City's nicest hotels - while some sites list it as a 4.5* hotel, many list it as a 5* hotel. Additionally, with this you would specify two beds.

I wanted to put this in a separate post from the other ideas I had because I wanted to highlight it. If you do want to book this hotel, please use the site's link to Travelocity.com to start your booking.

These are other ideas I came up with while browsing.

To throw out a couple of examples:

8/1-4: Search for 2 adults/2 children on Hotwire and there is a 3* in Midtown East with the amenities: Suite, Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Kitchenette for $229 (the price you see may differ slightly). This is likely the Beekman Tower, an all-suite property in Midtown East. It's not a 4*, but this would at least get you more towards the $200 mark instead of the $300 mark, plus it would provide a kitchenette in room and larger space. If you search for 7/25-28, the same listing shows up for $209.

7/28-31 on Hotwire, there is a 4* Boutique with Fitness and Internet in the Central Park area. This is likely the Empire.

If you are interested in any of these properties, please use our link to HOTWIRE

The Hilton New York is $269 via Expedia.com for 7/25-28.

I can also find the W Times Square for $279.33 via this "Stay 2 Nights, Get 1 Free" special - $419 x 2, + 1 night free = $838/3 = $279.33

The site's link to that deal is here: Stay 2 nights, get 1 free

Quikbook.com has the Hotel Roger Williams for $262 on 7/25-28.

Thanks for the legwork, that's very informative. I'm still unsure of travel dates, I'd like to arrive in NYC on a Monday or Tuesday. I will make my travel plans and post them here, then look more diligently. Thanks again.

Finally set our dates for a NYC trip, I had planned a July/August trip, however that didn't work out. So, now we're planning these dates, I got a little sticker shock looking at prices, much higher than I saw for the earlier summer dates. Is this because it's still so far out? Am I better off using Hotwire now or waiting? I'm looking to stay in Midtown, preferably under $300.

I assume you're looking for one room?

If so, PRICELINE would be very risky to use since they only guarantee double occupancy and with NYC hotel rooms being notoriously small, there are a high proportion of rooms with onlly one bed and little or no room for a rollaway.

HOTWIRE will allow you to search for up to quad occupancy and guarantees sleeping acccomodations for everyone included in your search.

Prices are high due to the time of year... Fall is much more expensive than summer. What is the minimum star rating you're willing to accept? If you search HOTWIRE (for 2adults/2children) does anything appear in within your budget?

Unfortunately, the best thing I'm seeing is a suite at the Buckingham for $339 via Quikbook.com. If you are interested in this option, please use the site's link to Quikbook.com.

Otherwise, I'm not seeing anything under $300.

If you have any flexibility on location, Chicago, Boston, Miami, San Diego and other locations are cheaper or significantly cheaper on these dates.

We're pretty much set on NYC, we have our airfare booked already, although I am shocked to see how much higher the rates are for this time of year. Will these rates likely drop as the travel date nears? Probably not, I would guess. Thanks for all the help.

If you want to bet on rates dropping, you could book a "back-up" now and then keep trying for lower prices on Priceline/Hotwire. If you were able to get something cheaper on PRICELINE / HOTWIRE, you could cancel the existing reservation. If you weren't able to get anything cheaper, then at least you'd have a room.

Checking Hotwire, listed is a 4 star property ($349) in Midtown Central, listed amenities, nonsmoke, fitness, restaurant, business, and internet. Checking this list shows the same amenities for the Sofitel or the Helmsley Park Lane (except for the NS rooms). However, when looking at these hotel sites, they don't show accomodations available for 4 (2 children). So, is it one of these properties or something else? Also, as a low-cost backup plan, I booked a room at the Marrakech hotel through Quikbook (linked from here) for $243 per night, which seems cheap, although the hotel and location are not exactly what I'm looking for.

Ahh, I see from an earlier post that it is speculated that this is the Sheraton New York, which makes sense. While $349 seems like a good deal, relatively speaking, the hotel gets mixed reviews and I'm sure my two night total will be near $850. So, I'll keep looking, for now.

Interstingly, the Sheraton New York disappeared from Hotwire(at $349) two days ago, and appeared on the Sheraton site (and everywhere else) at $289 per night, however this is a non-refundable rate. I'm tempted to pull the trigger, but I hate to be committed 7 weeks out. Should I?

Nobody can say if rates will go up or down from there. If this was for double occupancy i would probably hold-off... but since you need two beds i think it's a fair deal.

If you do book direct, please use our Sheraton New York link to begin your purchase.

Update, I called Holiday Inn (57th Midtown Central) since I'd seen a $289 rate, but again non-refundable. I was able to negotiate over the phone a refundable rate of $306. This is good for me because living on the East Coast of Florida, I hate to be committed to a reservation at the height of storm season. I gave up my ressie at the Marrakech.

Hotwire now lists a 3.5 in Times Square at $345, amenities are fitness, restaurant, business, and internet. This seems to be a match for the Crowne Plaza, is this a pretty safe assumption?
