sectrean Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Hi,I'm trying to get a hotel in New York for October 23-26.The areas I'm interested in are MTE, TS, CPS, MTW and ESB. I've already tried bidding for a 4* in these areas. I started at $120 and got up to $175 using the re-bidding zones. Should I wait until the date is closer?Do I need to be willing to spend more to get a 4* in one of these areas? Is this a peak season for NYC? I would be fine with trying for a 3* if a 4* is going to be substantially more than $175. What would be a good place to start for a 3*?
thereuare Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding!Yes, this is an expensive time in NYC. Based upon current rates i think a 4* for $175 is going to be a tough win... and a 3* miight be tough at that price too. However, a lot can change between now and the end of October so i wouldn't be so quick to compromise your star rating just yet.Do you have a reasonably priced cancellable back-up? (use our BetterChecker and also Quikbook to help find cancellable back-up options)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. sectrean Posted August 4, 2008 Author Report Posted August 4, 2008 Update:I've bid up to $235 for a 4* in all zones (CPS, Downtown, ESB, MTE, MTW and TS) and up to $230 for a 3* (CPS, Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MSG, MTE, MTW and TS). I've also bid up to $195 for a 2.5* (CPS, Chelsea, ESB, MSG, MTE and MTW).None of these were accepted. I have a refundable back-up reservation, but it's just an OK place and I'd like to get something better. Do I need to just be patient or do I need to be prepared to spend more? A lower price is more important to me than a higher star rating, but I don't want to go below a 2.5*.
thereuare Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Where and how much is your back-up?Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
sectrean Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 Where and how much is your back-up?It's Hotel 31 at 120 East 31st Street. I've stayed there before. It's not great, but it's decent and clean. It's $160/night.Like I said, it's OK, but I'd really like to get something better.
thereuare Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 How about the Desmond Tutu Center for $199/nite thru Quickbook? (please use this link)It's a little bit west and about a 10+ minute walk to the subway, but it includes breakfast and has been getting excellent reviews. (it's also cancellable up until a few days before your arrival so you can use this as a better back-up than what you have currently and continue to monitor PRICELINE and HOTWIRE)Does this work for your needs? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. (or our Quickbook link if you reserve the above) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
sectrean Posted August 5, 2008 Author Report Posted August 5, 2008 It sounds pretty good, but it's $362/nite.
thereuare Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I thought it looked cheap when i found it earlier and even doublechecked the dates since it seemed so low for these dates.Rates for your first nite are much more expensive than the following two nites, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. sectrean Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 We'd rather not have the inconvenience of switching hotels during our stay. If I'd have known that Thursday was going to be more expensive, we would have planned our trip for friday-monday rather than thursday-sunday. But the airline tickets have already been purchased.
thereuare Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Do I need to just be patient or do I need to be prepared to spend more?I think both... i don't see anything that meets your budget at the moment and given your back-up i would continue to be patient and bid on PRICELINE and search HOTWIRE every 3-4 days in an attempt to improve your back-up.Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. (please note if/when you receive an email from PRICELINE that you can bid again, please don't use the link in their email and come to the board and use our own PRICELINE link, thanks!!)Keep us updated and let us know if anything new comes along. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
sectrean Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 I've booked a better (also more expensive) cancellable backup. It's the Morgans Hotel for $279/night with free breakfast every morning. Good reviews and it was just renovated. The normal rate is $589/night and it's 4*. I don't know if I could beat that with PRICELINE. I might just stick with this.
thereuare Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I would still try PRICELINE up to $225 or so in an attempt to do better, but for now this looks like a nice deal for these dates. universitylad Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 Where did you book to get that rate with Morgan's? I love that hotel.
