Hi there,

We would really appreciate some bidding advice for a hotel stay in New York, 6 nights from the 22nd August - 28th August 2008. I have been twice previously and stayed at the Salisbury and Hilton New York. Although the Salisbury was quite dated, we found the suite we had a great size and good location. The Hilton was well located for our needs and we had two large beds in the room so if we could get that room again in the Hilton, I would be extremely happy.

I am traveling with my 2 and half year old daughter and my mother, a girls holiday! I just need a room that is of a good size, where I can fit the stroller, suitcases and some space for my little girl to run around in! I would also need a kettle.

Another minor point is being near a Subway station that is good for young children and strollers. Are there any child friendly subways by any chance?

I am also considering Midtown East but slightly apprehensive about some of the Tripadvisor 4* hotel reviews.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Welcome to the site :)

The Salisbury is definitely dated, but it remains popular for the room size and price (at least in comparison to other NY properties.) Location's good, too. If you're not spending all your time in the room, it's a good choice.

The issue with PRICELINE is that bidding on Priceline does not guarantee 2 beds - it only guarantees 1 bed, and many rooms in NYC are notoriously small, even at high-end properties. HOTWIRE, on the other hand, does guarantee bedding for up to 4.

What would your budget be per night?

When looking at tripadvisor reviews in major cities, keep in mind price plays a role. When people are spending $400 per night (which is common in NYC), it creates expectations that, understandably, cannot be met.

If a negative review talks about something of great concern, then that should definitely be taken into account, but otherwise you're going to get a lot of reviews from people who paid an incredible amount for what was likely a 200-250 sq ft room.

Last time I stayed in NYC with Hilton, I did book through Hotwire. I think I paid around $160 in Easter period 2005. I have been checking around sites and found someone paid $120 for a Sunday night stay during the time I would like to stay. I've also read that it might be difficult to get a 6 night stay at a good price. I'm not ruling out splitting the bid, staying Friday, Saturday and Sunday at one hotel and then moving if we don't get the same for the rest of the stay.

I understand that reviews can be biased and at times unreasonable due to high expectations but all I do require is a large room with two beds, I'm hoping that I can email the hotel and request a room with two beds after confirmation. Also, tea making facilities and a short walk to a choice of Subway stations.

I'm hoping to pay an average of $150 per night + taxes but if that's not possible I can increase this!

Thanks for your help!

Are you willing to take the risk that you won't be able to get a bed with two rooms? What if you email the hotel and they reply that they can't guarantee anything until you check-in OR that you've been assigned a room with one bed and they can't change the reservation? At this point it will be too late to do much about it.

It's up to you if you want to take the risk, but you have to realize that it is indeed a risk and it may not work in your favor.

If you want to move forward with PRICELINE, to confirm, you're looking for a 4* hotel in the MTW or TS zone up to $150 (which i'm doubtful will be enough for the entire stay, but can certainly give it a try). Is this correct?

I'm prepared for just one bed as the 3rd person is my 2 and a half year old daughter.

I bid up to $200 for MTW and TS, no success! Should I wait closer to the time or seriously consider splitting the stays?

Thanks for your help.

Hi all, I decided to split the stays so bidded successfully for a 3 night stay at the Millenium Hilton via Priceline for $170, 22-25 August. I am now hoping to get a 4* in MTW or TS for a further 3 nights, 25-28 August. I have reserved at the Residence Inn by Marriott, Times Square at $279 + taxes (cancel by 24 August with no charge) as my fall back. Do you have any advice as to how I should proceed with my 3 night stay in MTW or TS? Thanks in advance.
