Priceline Hotel: 4* NYC (MTE) InterContinental The Barclay

I've been bidding for about a week on a 4* in MTE for 7/25-7/29. Here's the gist: rejected up to $165.

So, after reviewing a lot of the posts here, I'm trying to come up with a strategy. First, I've got a question.

The best (most recommended) strategy is rebids. Assuming that I check to make sure that I can't bid on certain areas for the 4* option, is it 100% safe? That is, if I click Brooklyn (no 4*), what's the chance that Priceline will conjure up a 4* and I'll be stuck outside of Manhattan? Scary stuff (particularly for a high bid!).

So, going forward with the assumption that I am too timid to try rebids, what is a good strategy? Right now, I'll max out at $175/night. Should I

1) Add other areas? I'm worried about the "4*" Sheraton in MTW, but I'd be willing to try TS and CPS.

2) Split the bid? And if I do split, what is the best split (in terms of low prices)? I wouldn't like to change hotels daily!

I'm leaning towards the second option. Thanks.

You need to be comfortable with whatever strategies you use, but i'll say that if you did receive a hotel in a zone that previously only showed star ratings lower than the one you selected... you'd be the first to report such an occurence.

If you don't want to use re-bidding, please decide if you want to first add the TS and/or CPS zones OR if you prefer to first try SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID for just the MTE zone... we'll then advise accordingly.

I'm willing to try more areas first---that is, I'd like to try MTE, MTW, CPS, and TS (that is my order of preference), using only 1 rebid (I'm comfortable choosing UES). I'd like to stay below $185/night.

Thanks.

Up to $150, no bite (for 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, TS)! I've overcome the aversion to rebidding, so its pretty easy to bid. I'll let you know if I get anything tonight.

If you've been following the strategy as per above none of the bids should be a duplicate request... which bid are you on?

Are you now adding re-bid zones? (as you can always just as a re-bid zone to all the bids above if something is getting flagged as a duplicate... but make sure it is indeed a re-bid zone!!!)

AHA! I see what I did! I went on without direct advice and got myself in quite a bind. Here's what I did (so others don't mess up like me):

MTE, MTW, CPS, TS...

Bid $120

Rebid zone 1 $125

Rebid zone 2 $130

Rebid zone 3 $135

Rebid zone 4 $140

Rebid zone 5 $145

Rebid zone 6 $150.

Should have stopped for a minute and reconsidered. I could have gotten up to $175 easily if I had closed the browser earlier. Oh well.

Also, I am considering ESB. Any advice on the locations of the 4* hotels there? They seem to be pretty close to grand central... is it practically MTE?

Thanks.

The northern end of the ESB zone is right across the street from Grand Central... the Southern end goes down towards "Murray Hill". This area is fine, imo, but some users don't like to bid it (i'm not really sure why :) ) No 4* hotels have been reported in this zone as i don't think there are too many, and what is in the zone, is usually pretty expensive. The W New York The Court is one possible 4* in this zone.

If you want to include the ESB zone too let us know if you're going the "re-bid zone" or "NO re-bid zone" route and we'll advise accordingly.

SUCCESS!

After my debacle, my wife decided it was her turn to bid. Apparently the prices changed overnight, too. (For my dates, HOTWIRE has $179 for a hotel in MTE; I suspect it is either the Grand Hyatt or the Intercontinental).

Dates: 7/25/08--7/29/08

Hotel: Intercontinental Barclay (1 room)

Price: $140/night + ~$100 (taxes + fees ) = $660 total (WOOT)

Bidding:

Pick MTE, CPS

Bid $120, NO

Rebid $125, NO

Rebid $130, NO

Rebid $135, NO

Rebid $140, YES!!!!!

She used your PRICELINE link, BTW. Thanks for the help.

Congratulations on your win!

Who knew that last nite's rejections were a blessing :)

This looks like an excellent rate for this property and it's in the zone you wanted when you first started bidding.

As i often do for users in this area, i recommend Ess-A-Bagel for breakfast one day not too far from this hotel (on Third Ave at 51st St)... one of the best bagels in the city and makes for an inexpensive breakfast among the locals.

Thanks for sharing your win with the board and for using our PRICELINE link to begin your bidding.

Enjoy your stay.
