pmarsh Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I have never used priceline before and I need help on who to best bid for a hotel room. I would like to stay in a 4 star hotel but I would take a 3 star and I would like to stay in the Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Midtown West, or Central Park South district. I need to keep the price under $150 per night. What is the best strategy for me?Thanks for any help you can offer.
Carlp22 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Hi pmarsh,As an option, would you consider Jersey City? Just across the Hudson.I just stayed there and it is very convenient to the city (along with a GREAT view). I tried to get a hotel in the city and people suggested Jersey City to me. My bid of $105 was accepted at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City On The Hudson. You are right next to the PATH station.Good luck,Carl
thereuare Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! Is there a reason you're avoiding the East side? Are you intentionally not include the MTE or ESB zone(s)? I think this may be a tough win at under $150 so by including all acceptable zones it increases the number of possible hotels able to accept your bid and therefore helps your chances of success.Let us know and we'll take it from there. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. pmarsh Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 Hey, I have never been to New York and I just picked the ares that looked like places where I have heard of. I have since been told to try to stay below 100th st so I am willing to stay anywhere wth the exception of Chinatown (I was advised to stay away from there). The Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson seems like a nice place as well. I have been told that Jersey City on the waterfront is nice but to stay away from the rest of the city. I wouldn't mind staying at the Hyatt but I am hesitant to bid on Jersey City because I don't want to end up in a bad section of town.Any more advise or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all!
thereuare Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 It comes down to convenience/experience vs. budget. If you've never been to NYC, and don't have an aversion to large cities, i would try to stay in Manhattan unless it's prohibitively expensive. Jersey City is great, and i'm a big advocate of staying in the waterfront area, but you do lose much of the "nyc feel" and the "pulse" of the Manhattan. If you stick with 3* and above i don't see any issue landing in a "bad" area (imo) of Jersey City as PRICELINE's zone currently only covers the waterfront area and slightly inland. It doesn't go as far west as Kennedy Blvd/Rte. 1&9 as HOTWIRE's zone does. With the above noted, i'm not so certain the Hyatt is currently offered for your dates, as hotel direct rates start at $379/nite.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. pmarsh Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 I think that I would like to try Manhattan first and see what results I can get. I am comfortable with anything below 100th except for chinatown and I would like to stay 4* if possible but would take 3* if I have to. I need to keep it under $150.Thanks for your help!
thereuare Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Chinatown is part of the Downtown-SoHo-Financial zone so don't include that in your bidding. At the 4* level you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTE, MTW, CPS, TS, and ESB...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150.Any questions feel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes. pmarsh Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 So there are no 4* hotels in Brooklyn, Chlelsea, Long Island City, Madison Square Garden, Upper East Side, or Upper West Side? These would be the rebid zones and I use a different one to make a higher bid? Thanks for helping me!
pmarsh Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 No LuckHeres what i did.CPS, ESB, MTE, MTW, TS 4* $120 NOAdded Chelsea $125 NOAdded MSG $130 NOAdded Upper West $135 NOAdded Upper East $140 NOAdded Long Island City $145 NOAdded Brooklyn $150 NOAny thoughts on what I should do now or how to go about bidding on the Jersey City Stuff (if that would make sence)? Thanks!
pmarsh Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 Also, If I change the dates to only the 29th-31st can I rebid the same things? I might change travel plans. How should I go about bidding 3* for the same areas? Thanks for all your help!
thereuare Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 If you change your dates you can re-bid immediately without waiting 24 hours since your last rejected bid.Since you can't really do anything until you firm up your plans, why don't you figure out if your next step is to change your dates, look towards Jersey City, or lower your star rating and we'll advise for however you'd like to proceed. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. pmarsh Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 Ok, we are going to be in New York City on the 29th through 31st. I tried the exact same bidding strategy for the 2 nights and was rejected. I also bid $125 on Jersey City 3* and got rejected and rebid $130 and added elizabeth and got rejected. I think I want to look 3* for the Manhattan excluding Chinatown. Thanks for your help!
thereuare Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 At the 3* level you have THREE re-bid zones. pmarsh Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 I went through that whole list with the exception of Times Square (the reviews for the hotels listed in the zone were not good). All of the bids up through $150 were rejected. Any thoughts on where to go from here? Thanks!
thereuare Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Essentiallly you choices come down to:-increase your budget-lower your star rating-add other zones and/or look outside of NYC-wait it out and try againWhat is the best rate you're able to get at an acceptable hotel thru conventional methods? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Sciamano Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I've been bidding for the same dates for a while now. No luck at all.I guess the "good times" when one could pick a 4* hotel in NYC at <$100 are long gone.I paid $87 for the NY Hilton in 2002, but since then there has been a constant raising of PRICELINE rates... :)
