Rental Car Long Beach...week later price doubled?

I am flying into Long Beach, CA for two college graduations (both my kids) 5 days apart (2 RT flights cheaper than staying in hotel for 8 days!) Or maybe not after trying to book this 2nd car rental :)

I used PL and booked compact car for 5/22 returning 5/23 and got $12/day rate. I am flying down again, 5/27 returning 5/30 and I am unable to get that rate...I've bid up to $22. I keep trying after 24 hours. I did get second chance and bid again and still denied. Lowest price I can find is HW for $35 a day.

Any tips/tricks/suggestions or was I just very, very lucky? Does Memorial Day week have anything to do with it? :)

5/22 - 5/23 is Thurs/Fri which is considered a weekend in the rental car world.

5/27 - 5/30 is midweek - this is when business travelers rent and their companies are willing to pay top dollar for rentals. That is why it will be difficult for you to find a good deal.

Thanks for the insight! I would have thought just the opposite...slow during the week and busy "weekends". It makes sense business travelers are willing to pay more!
