Priceline Hotel: Book multiple rooms to get suites? 05/04/2008 - 05/07/2008

My party will include three adults, and three kids aged 5 and under. What I'd really like is a large suite or connecting rooms, but from reading this site I understand that all I am guaranteed is that one room will accommodate two adults.

Would it make sense to book three rooms and hope the rooms can be connected or the reservation exchanged for a suite? At the worst we could stay in three separate rooms with one child in each, but it wouldn't be much fun. Alternatively, is there a place in Manhattan I can deal with directly that will accommodate us at a reasonable price?

Welcome to BetterBidding!

I would not recommend booking multiple rooms with the hopes of exchaning them for a suite.

If you can get connecting rooms, it would likely only be two that connect... i don't think there are many rooms with connecting doors on each side.

What do you consider 'reasonable' for a suite? If looking for 3 rooms, what is yoru budget per room per nite? What is the minimum star rating you're looking for?

Well, I have been offered a sublet apartment for $1500 for the three nights. I really don't care about concierges, restaurants and so forth - as long as a place is clean and has sufficient beds (at least four plus a cot, preferably five plus a cot) I don't really care. So, I guess my upper limit is $500 a night for the room or rooms and 2 1/2 star and above just to weed out the real dregs.

Since you prefer one area for the group (ie- apartment) vs. 3 rooms in a hotel, wouldn't you need to save some money over the price of the sublet? It would also seem that having a kitchen for the 3 kids would be extremely helpful too.

My question/concern regarding the sublet though are: where is it located, how many bedrooms, do you know anyone who has stayed here previously, is there an elevator (wouldn't want a 'walk-up' traveling with the kids), and is there a cleaning fee in addition to the $1500 above.

A sublet apartment would accommodate our whole party at a cheaper rate, but I don't know the owner or anyone who has stayed there. A hotel is more reliable, and provides more recourse if I'm unsatisfied, but it's likely to be more expensive and will probably divide my party. Incidentally, a friend of mine who travels with his kids always asks for adjoining rooms. When the hotel says they can't supply them he says, "OK, the kids will stay in one room and my wife and I will stay in the other." He says he's never failed to get adjoining rooms that way ... but that's not a solution I want to risk.

The sublet I was offered is on the West Side, two bedrooms plus a couch and crib, ground floor and includes a cleaning fee. So it compares to a hotel room in price.

For three rooms to equal your cost of $500/nite you'd be looking at $150/nite per room before taxes, which i don't think is going to happen for your dates above. We can suggest a strategy to try if you'd like, but i'll comment that even at the 2.5* level you might find some undesirable properties... let us know if you'd like to set a 2.5* minimum or if you'd prefer a 3* minimum as well as which zone(s) you're willing to accept and we'll suggest a strategy to follow.

Exactly where on the West Side is the sublet?
