NathanS Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 I'm looking for NYC Midtown (Mar 21-23) and I've seen the advice on the board. I don't understand what a rebid zone is.The first set of instructions usually say choose MTE, MTS and UM and then you say add rebid zones. What does that mean? Thanks,N
NathanS Posted March 11, 2008 Author Report Posted March 11, 2008 Feeling a little stupid - just found an explanation 7 posts below this one. Thanks. But any help with bidding strategies would be greatly appreciated.
thereuare Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! What is the minimum star rating your willing to accept? NathanS Posted March 12, 2008 Author Report Posted March 12, 2008 I'd really prefer 4*, but I guess 3* is OK. I see the Hudson is considered a 3* and I think I'd be happy with that.Maximum bid - $150. I'm hoping the fact that I'm going on a weekend helps. And aside from Midtown, I'd be happy with Times Square..Thanks
thereuare Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 I'd really prefer 4*, but I guess 3* is OK.Do you want to try for a 4* up to your maximum and then, if rejected, try for a 3*... or are you looking for the least expensive 3 star or better?I see the Hudson is considered a 3* and I think I'd be happy with that. You need to be comfortable with ay 3 star hotel in the zone(s) you select....aside from Midtown, I'd be happy with Times Square.MTE, MTW, UM/CPS, MTS, and Times Square? NathanS Posted March 12, 2008 Author Report Posted March 12, 2008 I'd like to try for 4* up to my maximum, then 3*.yes - MTE, MTW, UM/CPS, MTS, Times SquareAnd my dates have changed - I need a place from the 20th to the 23rd, 3 nights. I'd be willing to switch hotels, if necessary though.
thereuare Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 In looking at rates for your dates i'm guessing that $150 may not be enough. To give it a try:At the 4* level you have four re-bid zones, three re-bid zones at the 3* level. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS and Times Square and MTS...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW and Times Square...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS and MTS and MTE...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW and UM/CPS and Times Square and MTS...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150.You can try the above and then if rejected try again at the 3* level. If that too is rejected, you can then try again at the 4* level for 3/21-3/23 and then again for 3/20-3/22. If that too is rejected you can try again at the 3* level for 3/21-3/23 and then again for 3/20-3/22.Any questions feel free to ask. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. NathanS Posted March 12, 2008 Author Report Posted March 12, 2008 Thank you. I'll let you know what happens.
NathanS Posted March 13, 2008 Author Report Posted March 13, 2008 I'm looking for NYC Thursday March 20th until Sunday the 23rd. You've given me a strategy and I'm going to try it tomorrow. But I had a thought. As this is Easter weekend, the weekend rates may be high.I read on the Priceline site that you can add nights to your reservation. Would a good strategy be to book a single night on the 20th and then add two nights? How likely is it that you'd be able to do this? Thanks,N
thereuare Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 You can't use the 'Add a Nite' feature as you suggest above...You can only add nites up to the number of nites of your original purchase. So if you purchase one nite you can only add one nite... not two.As well, the add a nite feature is not always offered (and even when it is, the hotel may not be avaialable for the extra nite(s) you need and/or at the same price as your original purchase)... so you could be forced to change hotels or pay much more for the additional nites than the amount of your accepted bid for the sole nite. Please remember to use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. NathanS Posted March 13, 2008 Author Report Posted March 13, 2008 How can I figure out what the rebid zones are on the 3* bid? I can only see Long Island City as a rebid zone. ThanksNathan
thereuare Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 How can I figure out what the rebid zones are on the 3* bid?Priceline Re-Bidding ExplainedIf the above link does not clarify things, least each zone in the NYC area and the highest star rating available in each.If you are able to figure out your re-bid zones, it's recommended that you confirm them with the board before bidding. NathanS Posted March 16, 2008 Author Report Posted March 16, 2008 I ran the bidding all the way up to $245 on 4*, $235 on 3*. Hilton Midtown (4*) had a $260 rate (non refundable), which would have been equivalent to a $250 bid. So I went with the 4* hilton $259 from their website. Didn't want to risk losing that rate and having to pay more on PRICELINE.Easter Weekend is tough. Lesson learned.
thereuare Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, but you should also ask for help when PRICELINE rejected your bids as well... i see some very good 3* properties for less than you reserved the Hilton for, as well as an excellent 4* property for just $10/nite more (both of which are cancellable so you could have continued to try PRICELINE over the next week to continue to try to 'better' the deal)Also, please note as per our support page that we're an affiliate of the Hilton brand of hotels... please use our links for your hotel direct reservations. On a positive note, do try the "Street Meat" on the SW corner of 53rd and Sixth Ave (the cart that is there after 7:30pm... the line is evidence that it's well worth the $6 'entrance' fee)Enjoy your stay.
