:) howdy

well where do i begin...

I'm totally new to both priceline & hotwire but yesterday had success with hotwire for accommodation in NYC...so excited i stumbled upon these websites.

My problem today is that i seem to now be suffocated in accomodation info & now i dont know where to begin for LV hotels, esp as my dates fall over a weekend & I want more than 1 room - hence price variations.

Anyhow enough of my rambling - here is what i'm aiming at..

Topic Title: 4*-5* Las Vegas Hotels

Topic Sub-title: 04/11/08

Check-In Date: Fri, Apr 11, 2008 <-- Dates

Check-In Time: After 03:00 PM

Check-Out Date: Mon, Apr 14, 2003

Check-Out Time: afternoon

Your Offer Price: can vary(wanting a deal) from $70 -$170

Number of Rooms: 2 (Room 1= 1Adult ; Room 2 = 2Adults)

Number of Nights: 3 (11th, 12th, & 13th)

Accommodation definitely on strip.

Looking originally at

3.5*

Excalibur 141,171,121 (picked this for cheaper price only & location, seen as cheap as 78 per night)

4*

Monte Carlo 190,260,150

NYNY 170,230,170

PARIS wanted to get prices but couldnt obtain from website..why?. ( saw price $99 on hotwire results)

MGM Grande 200,260,200

4.5*

5*

Venetian 279,279,279 (prices seen as low as 139,159,155 on priceline results)

Palazzo 299,499,329 (prices seen on priceline 115,140,155)

Do not want to stay at Luxor, Westin, Caesars, circus circus,

Should I be booking now or waiting closer to the date? in case more rooms are released??

Please excuse this basic request for help...but many thanks for anyone who can assist

While I did not place it on here (Iknow I should have) I stayed at the plazzo feb 14th -feb 17th for $163. It was great.... granted Idon't know what room I would have been in for that rate as my roomate upgraded to impress his GF for $100/night to a room with a view, and the recepitionist gave us the 2 queen room with a view for the rate of the king with a view....and I must say the place is awesome... The casino is great, good service. Room service is $ and so are the in hotel resturants but then again its a 5*. Its the only 5* on the north strip from what I can tell so price your game accordingly. Vegas was great. Room was great, service was great, etc. Enjoy your stay

Why not share your results with the rest of the board... helping others as you have been helped by those before you.

Please post the details of your win in the appropriate forum and then bump this thread and we'll then have a look and comment in regards to your Vegas stay.

The best chance for the best deals are through priceline, but you have less control over where you will stay.

Based on the limits you are placing, you have to bid 5* on the south strip. 4* might give you hotels you do not want. It may be possible to bid 4* on the north strip. But if you are picky about where you might stay, it might be wise to bid 5* there, too. Apparently, Treasure Island has come up as a 4* on the north strip.

Likely, you will be going for the Venetian or the Palazzo. You already seem to know what people are getting them for. You could end up at TheHotel at Mandalay Bay if you have to bid up high enough.

All this info is gleaned from what other people have posted. You should post hotels you have won so other people can learn from what you have experienced.

You should not try PRICELINE before you know what you're doing. What is your main concern? Take your time and ask, you have plenty of time before you leave, it's better you ask before you bid so you don't get stuck in the wrong zone etc.

And you should not bid for 4* in the South zone since you don't want Westin or Luxor.

4* in the North zone are not so frequent reported. Most bidders go for 5*

If you need help with a bidding strategy so please post your nightly budget and what zones you're comfortable to stay in.

Henrik.

thankyou Henrik for taking an interest :)

Yep i'm not in too much of a hurry re bookings but as I'm doing all the bookings for my family (fit & healthy 55-60 yr olds)...they are the ones putting abit of pressure on, as they want everything booked yesterday. After discussion with them they want me to get a price for excalibur & also a choice of a nicer hotel like venetian? or something of that nature!

Since finding this website I have spent some hours - which go so fast - researching results strategies ...but i think i now have information overload....

so any assistance would be great from anyone who has any knowledge

happy daisy,

One thing you must realize is that rates are date specific. The rates that others have won may be too high or too low for your own stay. Given the rates you have posted above i think many of the PRICELINE/HOTWIRE rates are much too low to expect that you will be able to duplicate them.

I think your first step is to determine what it is you actually want for this trip and how much you're willing to pay for it... do you want to try for a 5 star property? Is the Excalibur a realistic option? Do you want to stay for as cheap as possible ($70 at the low end of your posted range) or stay at some place nicer (and go up to $170 on the higih end of the range you posted)

Also, since you must be on the Strip, you eliminate the 4* Strip South zone (which contains the majority of 4* hotels on the strip) since it contains the Westin, which is in this zone but slighly off strip (if you decide to bid and this prpoerty is acceptable let us know so that we know to include it in a suggested strategy)

Given your budget, i'd guess that your chances of success at a 5* is less than 50/50 and for a 4* you will probably need to be near the upper end of your range. Note that if you choose to go for the Excalibur, we are an affiliate and please use the links in our support page

Let us know your current thoughts based upon the above and we'll advise accordingly.

yep I do realise that dates are specific...so thanks for reaffirming that.

as stated in my earler post we are wanting a excalibur price & also another 'better'one for comparison in case they decide to spend extra for their stay in LV..mgm, paris,venetian...even monte carlo would help...so basically i need a bidding strategy for excalibur & also a bidding strategy for the other...

i know this is double the work however..this is the best i can do at the moment after discussion with the travellers,...so if anyone can assist with a biding strategy for either would be greatly appreciated.

They're not ready to bid yet anyway, so have them make a decision and we'll suggest a strategy for them to follow once they decide what it is that they're really want for this stay.

Just a friendly observation -- you cant narrow down your hoped-for hotels too much as there are a lot of other variables. For example, if you bid for a 3-star in the South Strip zone and PL has extra Westin inventory, you can be complimentarily upgraded to the Westin. Or just maybe, even though it hasn't come up in quite some time, the Trop could somehow possibly show up. Plus Luxor and Planet Hollywood are both 4-star properties in the South zone -- just because their rates may be slightly higher than the published rates for the other hotels doesn't mean the others are more likely to be PL winning bids. If you want an almost-guarantee of the hotel before having your credit-card billed, HOTWIRE would be a much better alternative than PRICELINE (if you can ID the hotel based on amenities beforehand). (Make sure you use the links via this website.)

FYI for whatever it is worth, just trying to be helpful as a frequent Vegas traveler -- I hope you get a hotel you are happy with and have a great trip. Good luck!

I would also ask them "what hotel(s) on the strip are they afraid of getting"? (especialy at the 4 star level)

For example, at the 4* level i certainly have properties which i like better than others, but for the right price, i can stay at any of them and be content. I actually wasn't a fan of the MGM Grand (it's SOOO big), but stayed there last week simply because i got a deal which was hard to pass up... turned out the room was great and it changed my feelings on the property. While i was simply 'ok' staying there on this recent trip, i would know look forward to returning to this property.

In regards to your last question above as to how to target the Excalibur, as travelAlot points out above... you can't.

Thanks for you help & patience

After much discussion , they have now decided that the short list of hotels for the dates In: 11 & Out 14th April are;

Excalibur (still)

MGM

Monte Carlo

Venetian

looks like they want to be up that end of town...they want a good deal....

But now they have asked me to get your advice to steer them in the right direction...sorry

Again, they need to understand the limitations of the opaque suppliers.

If they only want a short list of specific hotels, then PRICELINE is not the answer for them. PRICELINE is for those who are flexible in their plans and are willing to accept any hotel in the zone(s) they choose at the minimum star level selected.

HOTWIRE may be an option for them as you can often take a very educated guess at the hotel being offered before your purchase, but there is still a risk involved as you won't know for certain the hotel until after you make your purchase. However, if this is a risk you're willing to take, then you're going about it backwards... you shoujldn't make a list of the hotels you want and then look for them on HOTWIRE, but rather do a search on HOTWIRE for your given dates, try to determine the hotels offered which are within your budget and star quality, and then determine if you'd be happy with any of them for the price.

Attempting to secure 2 x 5*rooms in South & North strip zones

time has been on my side so I thought I would try even though probably will book a 4*due to budget

I've been bidding over a few days (bidding days march 7th-13th)

Starting at $123 (I know this is a long shot - but thought i'd try)

other bids with some counter offers of 126,134,139,142,149,151,153,154 all being rejected.

Last bid of $160 was also rejected with no counter offer.

Yesterday on this board i read that someone won the venetian for $165 for the same dates - so i now know i was close!

(However I had started to bid for 4* hotels in this zone - which i will post in due course)

I hope this may help someone else!

Hoping to secure a Sth Strip 4 * Hotel

I used the PRICELINE link on this board

My bidding strategy to date; :)

Started bidding with 4* South Strip zone @81 - rejected

Added Nth Strip zone @86 - rejected

On next day

Started bidding with 4* South Strip zone @81 - rejected but counter offer $149 made this time.

Added free rebid zone of henderson @ 87 rejected

On next day

Started bidding with 4* South Strip zone @88 - rejected but counter offer $149 made again.

Added free rebid zone of henderson @ 90 rejected

On next day - which was yesterday

Started bidding with 4* South Strip zone @92 - rejected but counter offer $149 made again.

Added free rebid zone of henderson @ 95 rejected

Added Nth Strip zone @96 - rejected

My Research shows that the average nightly rates - being date specific - are;

4*

M/Carlo: 179 , NYNY: $ 190, Paris: $220, Caesars: $260, P/holly: 289

MGM: $187 is classed as a 4.5* on some sites

3* Excalibur 134, Luxor: 152

Any help with bidding strategy would be great! :)

Bidding is still well below the rack rates above - but if anyone else knows of better deals for these dates please let me know!

In my opinion, there is a very wide margin between the 5* properties and the 4* properties... i would first determine which you really want for this stay (ie- would the extra money for a 5* hurt your budget and enjoyment while in Vegas, how much time will you have to enjoy the room, etc) and then do the best you can for that star rating.

Can you quantify how much you'd need to save for 4* property to be worthwhile vs. a 5*?
