marabar Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 We're interested in staying at a hotel on or near the beach in San Juan from 3/19-3/21. I've seen that others have been getting good deals on the Caribe Hilton for January (around $120 for stays in January), but my bids have been rejected. I've bid up to $150 so far; that's about as much as we're willing to spend. I'm wondering if I should keep trying, or if $150 is unrealistically low for prime spring break dates. Thoughts?
thereuare Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding! Not sure how familiar you are with San Juan, but the Condado area (where the Hilton is) really isn't near the "real" bach of San Juan (in the Isla Verde section). The Caribe Hilton has their own beach, but it's man made and not really the "beach" that most have in their mind when they think of a beach. If you're not successful with priceline up to your current limit, where will you stay and at what price? marabar Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 Thank you! I'm completely unfamiliar with San Juan, so that's good to know about the Hilton. We don't have a backup secured yet - I'm still trying to get a sense of what's out there that we could afford. I've also been watching HOTWIRE, and what looks like the Sheraton Old San Juan (it matches BetterBidding's list of amenities) has a good rate ($112), but it's not on or near a beach. If we do want beach time while we're in San Juan, do you think it would be better to stay in a hotel with beach access, or doesn't that matter? Thanks for your help!
thereuare Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Obviously if your focus is spending time on the beach then staying at a beachfront property would be more convenient. If you do end up staying in Old San Juan you could take a cab or local bus to the Isla Verde area. Taxi fares would easily add up quickly as it' not that close, but the bus is CHEAP (i think i recall just over $1 per person) but the ride would probably take close to an hour. So it really boils down to your budget vs. the convenience of how close to a beach you want to be (and how frequently you want to go to the beach as well as if you're comfortable being at the beach for the whole day or if you prefer to be able to go back to your hotel periodically throughout the day).If you do go with HOTWIRE please use this HOTWIRE link to begin any purchases you make.Let us know your thoughts and/or what you decide or if we can be of further help. marabar Posted January 11, 2008 Author Report Posted January 11, 2008 Thanks - your advice has been great! We thought about it some more and decided that proximity to a beach/water was definitely our priority. I bid $150 again on Priceline today, and got a message inviting me to raise my bid by $25, so I did. We ended up with the Caribe Hilton for $175/night from 3/18-3/21. Again, thanks so much for your help!
