kh_ Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Heya, first time to New York and to Priceline.I understand that the best areas to stay for tourists are MTE, MTW, UM/CPS and Times Square. If this right? Ideally, I don't want to spend more than $200 including taxes, so I guess I can't big more than ~$165. Do you think it might be possible to get a 4* hotel at this time for that kind of money? I know that people are getting them for less than that at the moment, but I don't know what the difference in price will be between now and mid March. Thanks in advance
kh_ Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 Sorry, just realised I posted this in Hotwire and not in Priceline - could an admin move it?
thereuare Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 $165 may be tough for a 4* for this time of year, but you can try as follows:At the 4* level you hav two re-bid zones available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Selct 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* UM/CPS and Times Square...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTW and Times Square...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTE and Times Square...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTW and MTW and Times Square...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150 if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTW and MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150 if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Selct 4* MTW and MTW Times Square and UM/CPS...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $165 if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170 (<-- which i still think gets you within your $200 'all-in' budget, but doublecheck before placing your bid)Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. kh_ Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 Thanks for the help! I followed the instructions, and went up to $166/night (which is my maximum, including tax) and couldn't get anywhere. Not sure whether to try in a few days, or go for a 3*. My worry with a 3* is that someone has got the Sheratton Manhattan for those dates, and it sounds pretty horrid after reading the reviews on TA - wouldn't want to go there. If I did go for a 3* then presumably I could bid a lot lower? Any advice appreciated!
thereuare Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 What woudl be your maximum bid for a 3*? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
kh_ Posted January 11, 2008 Author Report Posted January 11, 2008 What woudl be your maximum bid for a 3*?Our budget's still the same, I guess, but we probably wouldn't want to pay quite as much. Maybe max of $160/night inc taxes, so $135 bid. I haven't managed to find any hotels for anywhere near that on Priceline or elsewhere, so may well consider looking at just booking somewhere if I could find it cheapyl. I don't have a backup yet, but it's still quite far away, so not sure if I should worry.
thereuare Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 You're currently basing your 3* maximum bid upon your rejected 4* bids, which doesn't make much sense, since the 4 star bids were rejected. Let's for example say that the 'right' number for a 4* hotel is $300 (i don't think it is, but stick with me for the sake of example)... your $165 has nothing to do with 4* hotel rates and therefore using it to derive a maximum bid amount doesn't make much sense.I think you should do a little more research first to find out the best deal you can currently find... then you'll have a better idea of what percent of your best deal you should be setting your maximum bid. kh_ Posted January 15, 2008 Author Report Posted January 15, 2008 We've now booked a room at the Pod Hotel, but around $128 night + tax and charges, working out at about $160ish night. We can cancel this up to a week before, and only pay $25, which we'd be happy to do if we found a 4* on Priceline for around $150 a couple of weeks before. Are Downtown and MTS very 'out' of it, or can they be cheaper if you don't mind a bit of public transport each day?
thereuare Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 MTS is usually fine... Downtown is a bit far 'out of the way' for the typical tourist.I wouldn't suggest adding Downtown at the moment, but as you get closer to your stay if you're still unsuccessful, then you'll have to make a decision between convenience and star quality.
