7/15-7/19

We are flying into JFK for a cruise leaving from the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on July 19th and plan on arriving on the 15th to spend a few days prior to the cruise. We will likely spend most if not all of our time in the Manhattan area. What is our best bet to keep commuting time/costs to a minimum and keeping our hotel stay relatively affordable.

The other thing which may prove to be a problem for us is the MLB All-Star game is on July 15th in Yankee Stadium, do you think that will greatly increase hotels prices for that week?

Also, when would you suggest we begin the bidding process?

Thanks in advance for your help...

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Staying out by JFK is usually NOT recommended. What is your projected nightly budget and minimum star rating? This will give us a bit more information and we will be in a better position to see what options are available.

I think for $150 (before taxes and fees) you have a good chance of landing a 3* hotel directly in Manhattan if you're flexible on zone(s) you're willing to bid.

If you let us know which priceline zones you're willing to accept we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

See this thread: Priceline New York City Zones

The most popular zones are MTE, MTW, TS, UM/CPS (all equally fine), followed by MTS when bidding 3 stars or less... then Downtown (which is non-central for the typically tourist... not tragic if you ultimatley have to stay here, but usually it's a last choice)

Let us know which you're willing to accept and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

That sounds good, I know nothing about NY. From the Priceline zones, MTS looked pretty central to most of Manhattan, so I thought that would be the place to go with. I'm very willing to accept your advice since I know zilch about NY...

Thanks...

You would have nothing to lose by starting now (except your patience!) and you can repeat bidding every 24 hours (but not 1 minute sooner or the clock starts timing the 24 hours all over again!). I have won bids as far in advance as 11 months (bid in December for next September in Anchorage before our Alaska cruise, and in San Francisco also 11 months out for the days after a cruise). Don't get frustrated if you don't win on your bid immediately. You have plenty of time -- and the results are usually more than worth the effort. :)

And BTW, while you're waiting for your Priceline ship to come in, have a look occasionally at the HOTWIRE offers. (I was able to get the Sheraton Manhattan for $103 per night for a 4 night stay in May. This may not be a fantastic hotel, but certainly a fantastic price and just what we need for our NY stay.) And PLEASE use the HOTWIRE link above or the savingsbarn.com site to begin your priceline bidding -- it helps this site keep functioning.
