newbie_ireland Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Hi,Thanks in advance for the help :-)I'm a complete newbie. I'm looking for a 4 * hotel in Midtown NYC (preferably near to Times Square) for under $350 a night.I've booked a refundable stay at Comfort Inn Midtown and have paid $360 a night for a room there so that's my budget. would be great to get something more upmarket for that price.Any advice on what to bid etc, would be GREATLY appreciated.thanks so much!
thereuare Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding!I think you can probably upgrade your accomodations vs. the Comfort Inn, but perhaps not for a 4* property. Which priceline zones are you willing to bid (MTE, MTW, UM/CPS, and MTS usually all work well for the average visitor). Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?Let us know regarding splitting the bid and which zone(s) you're willing to accept, we'll then advise accordingly. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
newbie_ireland Posted October 31, 2007 Author Report Posted October 31, 2007 Thanks so much for your reply - this site is great :-)Splitting the bid is not an option, we're planing on some major shopping (2 Irish girls let loose in NYC for first time) so would prefer to be guaranteed same hotel for 4 nights. As regards zones:We'd like to stick with Midtown so I guess MTE, MTW, and MTS Thanks again, Priceline isn't really big in Ireland so not many people have any information on it!!!
thereuare Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 As regards zones:We'd like to stick with Midtown so I guess MTE, MTW, and MTSAny reason you're not also including UM/CPS? Besides this zone being convenient, it will increase the number of hotels eligible to accept your bid, as well as increase the number of bidding opportunities you have. Thanks again, Priceline isn't really big in Ireland so not many people have any information on it!!!That's OK... the web is global :) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
newbie_ireland Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 Hi...sorry yes meant to unclude UM/CPS - we'd be more than willing to stay there too.thanks! Also - after looking into 3 * v's 4 * we'd probably be happy with a 3* too. Just don't want to end up with something worse than the comfort inn :-)So - any bidding advice would be great...
thereuare Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Is price or star quality more important...Did you want to try for a 4* first up to your limit... or the least expensive 3* or better is what you're after? newbie_ireland Posted November 1, 2007 Author Report Posted November 1, 2007 Is price or star quality more important...Did you want to try for a 4* first up to your limit... or the least expensive 3* or better is what you're after?I think quality is more important. We've already paid for the Comfort Inn, so to get a good quality hotel at the same price would be the preferred option. So I guess 4* within our limit first. Then we'd try the 3 *

thereuare Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Did you want to first go up to your $350 limit or drop to a 3*? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
newbie_ireland Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 Did you want to first go up to your $350 limit or drop to a 3*?I suppose my budget was approx $1400 all inclusive, so I stopped at $310 because including taxes and charges it came to over that. So my budget it $310 and not $350 as I originally thought.I guess I will drop to 3* but I'm worried that I'll end up with something not so great (at least with a 4* you're guaranteed a quality hotel no matter where it is).Ideally, a 3* in Times Square area would be good. Thanks for all the help
AaronJB Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Are you willing to split your stay between 2 hotels? I ask because the first two days of your stay are much more expensive in general than the last 2. They're all expensive, but the last 2 may be easier to get for at least somewhat cheaper, then you could try to find a hotel a little more expensive for the first two in an attempt to "average out" at the rate you were looking for.
AaronJB Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 6 Columbus Square - a very nice new 3* boutique by Central Park that gets mostly stellar reviews on tripadvisor - is $368 per night on Quikbook for 11/14-16, the busier dates of the 4. This is a substantially lower rate than the hotel website is showing for these dates. If you were able to bid for a 4* in either Midtown East or Midtown West (or MTS or UPM/CPS) for the slower 11/16-18 dates and score a win for approximately $260, you could combine that with the 6 Columbus for the first two and have a per-night average of just about $310.
thereuare Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I guess I will drop to 3* but I'm worried that I'll end up with something not so great (at least with a 4* you're guaranteed a quality hotel no matter where it is).Ideally, a 3* in Times Square area would be good. Are you will to bid all of the same zones as you did previously? newbie_ireland Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 Are you will to bid all of the same zones as you did previously?thanks for the repliesAaronJB - we're not really willing to split our stay, as we only have 4 days and dont want to spend the time checking in and out and moving if you know what I meanthereuare - I would probably be happy with a 3 * in any of the midtown zones, I'd just worry about the quality of the hotels. At least the comfort inn midtown (which we have booked) has gotten some really great reviews, so I'm happy enough with it.was just thinking it would be great to get a better quality one for the same price (it's expensive for the 4 nights...but then again, NY is expensive :) )
thereuare Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 I would probably be happy with a 3 * in any of the midtown zones, I'd just worry about the quality of the hotels. At least the comfort inn midtown (which we have booked) has gotten some really great reviews, so I'm happy enough with it.This makes it sounds as if you don't want to bid for a 3 star :)For the same money, what are your thoughts of your current Comfort Inn reservation vs. the Beekman Tower (be sure to read beyond the first two reviews) or the Holiday Inn ExpressAlso, just noticed the 6 Columbus Circle is now available for your complete stay for $368/nite and would be a jump in star rating. As well, this is cancellable up until a couple of days before your stay (actual cancellation terms would be shown at check-out) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
newbie_ireland Posted November 4, 2007 Author Report Posted November 4, 2007 Hi,I suppose deep down the star quality doesn't matter all to much, I base everything on tripadvisor, it's my travel bible :) So, what I would be afraid of, is getting a 3* hotel which might have really bad reviews....Does this make sense? I assumed that if I bid on and ended up with a 4* hotel midtown, I would be at least pretty much guaranteed a good hotel.I Looked at reviews for Holiday Inn express and Beekman, and Holiday Inn Express looks good. Great location, reviews are all good.Where would I get the best rate for here? Thanks
thereuare Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 If you search HOTWIRE (please use this link) there is a 3* in the MTS zone with Breakfast, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, and Business icons for ~$349/nite (your price may differ slightly)... this is a match for what has previously been reported for the Holiday Inn express so that would be our best guess (of course no guarnatees, but i'd be surprised if it wasn't the Holiday Inn Express.
