Priceline Hotel: 4* NYC - Need some advice

I am looking for 2 rooms in a 4* in NYC for 3/1-3/8 of 2008. I have started bidding on Priceline using re-bidding techniques but have gotten to $154 with no result. Is it simply too early to be bidding? I secured a cancelable back-up at The Barclay (supposed to be nice) just in case. If it is too early to start bidding, when should I start? I can stay anywhere in Midtown that is 4 star.

I wouldn't do so yet (although your answer would effect my current thoughts on a maximum bid)... as you get closer to your stay, if you're not successful, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

Do you need a 4* hotel (at nearly $300/nite) or would a 'nice' 3* be fine if it represented a better value?

I don't want to split the bids because we are meetin gup with another couple and are looking to stay at the same hotel (thats why I'm trying to get two rooms)....I really don't want to ask them to potentially switch hotels during the stay.

As far as the star rating, I've heard nightmares about some of the 3* places in NYC, so I feel much safer staying at a 4*.

All this being said, I'm willing to pay $200-$225/room/night....but if I can get 'em for less - great. With the ability to go higher, when should I start bidding?

Agreed, but i was thinking more along the lines of knowing the hotel, as well as alternatives/improving your back-up reservation. For example both of these are cancellable and may be a better value than the Barclay:

Eastgate Tower for $236/nite with great reviews

Affinia Dumont thru Quickbook for $266/nite with excellent reviews

Do either of the above work well for you? (as this will also determine the price of your 'back-up' which would in turn effect our current maximum bid strategy)
