I have heard amazing things about this site. This is my first post so be gentle. :)

Ok.

budget -- 300 preferably but up to 400

date -- Saturday night 11/10/07

not sure of the location. Any where within walking distance of cool bars, and/ or Broadway and / or time square.

This is my third anniversary with my girlfriend and we always go to New York City with her parents who don't really drink or go out except to Broadway shows. Long story short, we will have the entire room to ourselves, and I was wondering if...

a) are there any CLEAN rooms that may have a nice bar or trendy decor that would be an amazing anniversary idea for two twenty 3 year olds in this price range and at this time of year

and :) is it really better to get a 4 star hotel or would a higher end 3 star hotel actually be a better pick.

I have noticed wuite a few in this range, so I am wondering how good of a deal can I get without compromising either cleanliness, or a memorable place that stands out. Any help with the proper bidding procedure is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Board moderator thereuare will be along shortly and he can offer a detailed Priceline strategy if you are interested in using PL, but I thought I'd offer a few suggestions in the meantime.

One hotel that comes to mind in terms of trendy would be the Hudson, which is more a "scene with a hotel" than a "hotel with a scene." Rooms are famously (infamously?) small (as you can see in the negative reviews, apparently people didn't research and weren't aware that the room would be 150 sq ft going in.)

The hotel bar is a very popular hangout and the public spaces are quite neat looking. Your room will not be much, but if you are looking for a trendy scene and a popular bar, this would be a potential idea. I see what appears to be the Hudson on Hotwire.com for $362 (the price you see may vary slightly.) It is a 3.5* in the Midtown Central area with the amenities Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business. The hotel is showing a $409 rate for your dates, so while not a vast discount on Hotwire (if this is in fact the Hudson) it would be a discount.

The hotel is located in a nice area near Central Park (romantic walk?), but it would be a bit of a trek from Times Square - although definitely not terrible.

Another idea that is a little out of the way (but not terribly so) is the Roger Williams Hotel, a 4* that is showing on Orbitz.com for $359. This hotel does have an upscale lounge. Additionally, you may want to go this route instead of hip, trendy and potentially loud (like the Hudson.) You two could have a nice, quiet drink in the hotel lounge and be able to hear each other. Then you could save the trendy and loud for when you visit a bar. Up to you as to which you'd prefer for the occasion. There are few rooms left on Orbitz @ this price, according to the website.

Another full price idea is the Bryant Park hotel, which is very well-reviewed (4.5 out of 5 on tripadvisor.com) and appears a bit cheaper than everywhere else @ $395 on Quikbook.com. This would also be not far from Times Square.

Hotel prices are quite expensive during your travel date. Priceline would, from the looks of rates, be able to get you a 4* under $300, but 1:) not sure how much under $300 and 2:) Keep in mind with Priceline you do not pick the hotel. The hotel you end up with may not have a bar. 3:) I wouldn't try to bet on getting a "higher 3" (and really, what's a higher 3 to someone can be barely a 3 to someone else) 4:) What zones on the Priceline map for NYC are you interested in? I'm guessing MTE/MTW, but please confirm that.

Hope this helps with a few ideas to start with, and please let us know your thoughts & if you have any questions.

Additionally, the Bryant Park hotel and Roger Williams have never been reported as Priceline or Hotwire wins, so these could be ideas for special choices that you almost certainly would not get if you tried Priceline or Hotwire.

The Bryant Park Hotel looks particularly impressive on the tripadvisor reviews (4.5 out of 5 average), which you can see here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g6...y_New_York.html

Oh, plus Bryant Park has a trendy bar: "The hotel

What is it exactly you want from this stay?

You say you're willing to spend up to $400/nite for the 'perfect' hotel room, but also considering whether you should bid on a 3* property?

$400 is a LOT of money to spend on a hotel room; you can choose to spend this much and pick your hotel (as you say there are quite a few in this range) or you can decide that any money saved by using one of the opaque providers can be spent 'out on the town'. While there are some good hotel bars in the city, if you're looking for the latest trendy hot-spot it will most likely not be found at a hotel bar (nor do i recommend hanging out at your hotel bar or restaurants for a one nite hotel stay... too many places in the city with more characters to explore).

thank you for your quick responses

ok i want the nicest hotel we can get for about 250

i see the point of saving money to go out instead of getting a small room and having a hotel bar in it.

so what should I do to get a really nice hotel for around 250 in an area near time square (relatively) were the bar scene will be plentiful.

thank you so much

Let us know which zone(s) are acceptable... personally i'd bid MTE, MTW, and UM/CPS (and givne your budget possibly MTS too, although somewhat further than Times Square than you'd probably prefer, it will increase your chances and number of bidding opportunities).

We'll then be able to suggest a strategy for you to follow.

We'll break this into two bidding cycles...

At the 4* level you have two re-bid zones available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* MTE...

Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $175, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTW...

Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $175, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTE and re-bid zone2...

Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $190, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTW and re-bid zone2...

Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $190, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTE and MTW...

Bid $195, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $200, if rejected add re-bid zone2...

Bid $205.

Any questions feel free to ask.

The above will most likely be rejected, but i would start here and if declined we'll revise to try again in 24 hours.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

I have attempted this process including the rebidding in upper east and west sides since priceline says they have no 4 star hotel. Up to 205 for MTE MTW and UM/CPS

should I just repeat the process every 24 hours, or is there another approach

You can continue on as follows:

Select 4* MTE...

Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $215, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTW...

Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $215, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTE and re-bid zone2...

Bid $220, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $225, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.

Select 4* MTW and re-bid zone2...

Bid $220, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $225, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.
