alintz Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 I was shocked to find that the rates for December in NY are so high and lots are fully booked already. I want 2 rooms at a 4* MTE, MTW UM/CPS or MTS for two nights 12/7-12/9. Is $350-$400 likely? $450 is my maximum. Can you suggest a strategy? Thanks.
blindman Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Welcome to Betterbidding.thereuare will be around shortly to give a strategy.Whilst you're waiting have a look round the site at previous strategies and other possible accommodation options (Jersey City, Meadow lands etc).
thereuare Posted September 5, 2007 Report Posted September 5, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding!Welcome to "Christmas Season in NYC"... EXPENSIVE!!!To make sure we're on the same page... you're willing to go up to $450 per room per nite?I did see on HOTWIRE a 3.5* in the Times Square area for $285/nite... but unfortunately this property only appears when searching for one room? (i'd definately keep an eye to see if it appears in the near future when searching for 2 rooms... please use this HOTWIRE search to begin any searches/purchases you make)Alternately, if you really don't want to spend $400+ on a hotel room, have you considered other areas right outside the city, such as Jersey City? I believe you can likely get the Hyatt for half of the $450 rate you're quoting above... not as convenient as staying directly in the city, but there is a PATH train at the doorstep which can have you downtown in 10 minutes or into midtown in just over 15 minutes. Please confirm your maximum bid ($450 per nite per room?) and we'll suggest a strategy to follow, or if the other option(s) above are possibilities let us know and questions you have regarding them and we'll take it from there. alintz Posted September 5, 2007 Author Report Posted September 5, 2007 Yes, I would be willing to go up to $450 each for two 4 star rooms in midtown. I'll increment my bids in $25 steps instead of the usual $10 since the price is so high already. Where do I start?

alintz Posted September 10, 2007 Author Report Posted September 10, 2007 I used your strategy and stepped my bid up to $400 without getting accepted at a 4 star MTE, MTW, MTS or UM/CPS. I have rethought the sanity of spending over $400 for a hotel room, so I stopped there. Now I am looking for other suggestions. This is a 3 day, 2 night sightseeing trip into NYC to see the Christmas lights, and a few NYC landmarks, maybe some shopping, etc. I will investigate the Hyatt Jersey City and the PATH trains as already suggested. Any other areas or compromises on my original plan that you would suggest? Thanks.
blindman Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 Have a look at the Staying in NJ... Visiting NYC thread for info. There's also a link on the last post to another web-site that has info.Secaucus could be an option.I wrote a review of my stay at the Crowne Plaza
thereuare Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 Would you have any interest in the Hampton Inn (near Madison Square Garden) for $315/nite? It's not a 4* hotel and their are reports of the rooms being notoriously small, but the location is good and the reviews are mostly favorable.Essentially it comes down to what you're looking for... the above offers you the convenience of staying directly in Manhattan while the Jersey City option is less convenient but a higher rated hotel which also saves you $100/nite.I'm familiar with both areas so if you have any questions feel free to ask.Let us knowhow you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. alintz Posted January 5, 2010 Author Report Posted January 5, 2010 I just realized that I never followed up on this thread to provide the conclusion. I know it is probably very old information now, but better late than never (perhaps). We ended up staying at the Hyatt Hotel in Jersey City for $135/night - reservations were made directly with the hotel. It turned out to be a reasonable alternative to the very high prices on Manhattan during the pre-Christmas season. The Hyatt is essentially at the PATH train station, so there was no walking once you get there. It does take subways and a transfer to PATH trains at the temporary World Trade Center to get back and forth.
