eastcoastnovice Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 Hello there,I'm new to this forum and also will be new to the East Coast when I travel in September.I'm traveling alone to NYC for the first time and would like to stay at a 3* or 4* hotel.$150 is my absolute limit per night.I'll be there 9/9 - 9/12.I would like to probably avoid Times Square but I would like to do some shopping, stroll through Central Park, eat some good food, visit either the Met or the Guggenheim and get a feel for the city. My pals recommend I stay near Soho, Chelsea or Tribeca. I'm not worried about using public transportation - rather curious about it actually, so a bit of traveling within the city doesn't bother me.I'd love to be fancy in a fancy hotel but I can take the less-fancy as long as I have my own bathroom.I do need tips from the more knowledgeable amongst you on finding a hotel to stay in via Priceline for as far under my limit as possible.When to bid - how much to bid. Which areas to bid on. That sort of thing.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks very much.ecn.
AaronJB Posted August 21, 2007 Report Posted August 21, 2007 The thing about NYC is that once you get walking, you don't realize how far you're walking because there's so much to see. I'm not exactly athletic by any means, but the last time I went to NYC, I walked from 50th and 10th to battery park to the Brooklyn Bridge to Grand Central Station to Central Park Zoo to the History Museum and back. Keep in mind I wasn't even feeling my best - bad seasonal allergies. However, I was still able to cover a ridiculous amount of distance (12-15 miles?) because I was so into seeing the sights. I'd recommend staying in Midtown (East or West.)Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that while public transit is great if you need it, I'd recommend just strolling. I still can't believe I walked that much in the first day.As for a hotel, prices are very expensive over these dates (3* and 4*'s are $300-400+ and I believe you may have to bid up to $150 for a 4*; if that doesn't work, you may have to accept trying to bid for a 3* hotel.Board moderator thereuare will be along shortly to suggest a bidding strategy.
