Hotwire Hotel: base for visiting nyc

Hello,

We plan to visit nyc for 3 days -- 31st aug - 2nd sept but can't afford to stay in the city. Can you suggest area/city for staying outside of nyc but convenient and *safe* enough to visit nyc every day from the hotel? My budget is max 100-120 $. Also, I would prefer a 3 * hotel.

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier. I searched but couldn't find any info except one thread that suggested not to use area near ewr as the base.

You may want to try bidding for NYC before trying to stay outside the city. Keep in mind that if you stay outside the city you'll be stuck with some transit cost in order to get back and forth. Rates also don't seem too terrible during your dates, so it wouldn't hurt to try bidding on Priceline for 4* and 3* up to your max before deciding it's a no-go and trying for outside the city.
