Priceline Hotel: Oct 18-22 NYC Hotel - seeking advice

I just found your forum tonite. I am planning an anniversary trip with my wife Oct 18-22. It will be our first trip to NYC and I am excited! Want to do many tourist things, so I'm thinking MTW or MTE. I have had good luck with Priceline here in my Midwest travels, but am a little shaky on attempting one in NYC. I've looked on sites and rack prices for anything decent seems to be in the $200-300 range minimum.

I want a good room at good price. Do I need to go 4*? Are 3* in MT going to be okay? I don't want to bid, arrive in NY and be disappointed with the hotel. I want it to be a special weekend for our 20th wedding anniversary. I look forward to hearing your feedback and to sifting through numerous other threads.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Besides MTE and MTW, most also find UM/CPS to be good for the typical visitors needs... you should take a look at this zone and see if it will also work for your own needs.

Your budget will most likely determine whether you're in the 3* or 4* range.. what is your nightly budget (before taxes and fees) for this stay? At the low end of the range above, where did you find an acceptable $200/nite hotel for your dates? What were some of the other hotels, as i'm finding rates a bit higher than this for 4* properties.

I've gotten a couple of nice 4* Hilton properties in Minneapolis area for $75. I would be willing to spend up to $200 pre-taxes, etc. Where would you start? What strategy would you use? Thank you for your attention.

Will you also bid the UM/CPS zone or only the MTE and MTW zones?

Having never been to NY, I am of the MTE/MTW mindset (rookie). I would consider UM/CPS, but really would like to be within walking distance of lots of things. If including UM/CPS would cause me lots of extra transportation hassles, I'd rather spend the extra to stay MTE/MTW.

I had only done some cursory browsing of hotels and the $200-300 probably didn't include any 4* hotels. I guess I was hoping by using Priceline, that I might be able to attain a 3-4* for the $200 a nite price.

Sorry if I'm wishy washy. I'm really looking for a decent place to stay, in a good location, at a good price. is that possible?

NYC is a very walkable city... but it's also one where mass transit is a must. While you will do LOTS of walking, you shouldn't expect to be able to walk everywhere... plan on using the subway system. Even if you're in MTE or MTW, there will be LOTS of things that you'll need to use the subway (or other form of transportation to get to). As i mention in the I Want a Hotel Near Times Square thread... you will probably find that you will be spending more time outside of the Times Square area than you find yourself in it.

With the above noted, it's your trip, so you need to decide if you're willing to stay in this zone or not. My opinion is that it will not bring you 'transportation hassles'.

Let us know what you ultimately decide regarding the zones as well as if you'd prefer a 4* hotel for a higher cost or a 3* hotel for a lower cost (or if you're ultimately looking for a 3* or better for the least expensive price)... we'll then suggest how to proceed.

I think we would like a 3* hotel or better in any of the 3 areas we have mentioned ( MYE, MTW, CPS). I look forward to hearing your reply. Thanks!

Yes, let's include MTS as well. I noticed I made a typo in my last post. So we're clear, now we're looking at MTE, MTW, CPS and MTS. Thanks!

Just a 'warning' that many hotels, including the 3* properties in the zones above, have notoriously small rooms. I know this is a special occaision for you, so just want to make sure you're aware of it going in.

At the 3* level you have one re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.
