Hi. I am planning to stay in NYC with my family (4 people in total) from Aug31st to Sep06th . It is ok to stay in 1 room and we'd like to stay in Manhathan (Mid West / East Side or Upper West / East Side). I would prefer a 4*, but would readily consider a 2.5 or 3 * if there is a good price break. I am trying to obtain the room for under $150 per night. Please give me your recommendations or strategy for bidding. I am not from US and I know it will be labor day on Sep 3rd.

Thanks in advance.

PS: I have tried to enter Priceline and they ask for number of rooms, but not people in each room. How do I proceed?

Welcome to BetterBidding!

It is ok to stay in 1 room...
It may be ok with your, but it may not be ok with the hotel :) As well, you could receive a room with only one bed and no room for a rollaway or cot? Is this too acceptable? We do not recommend using priceline in NYC for more than double occupancy in NYC... although some users choose to take the risk (in an extreme situation, the hotel would be within their right to refuse you a room if more than double occupancy violates the occupancy level as per fire code)

Pricline's policy is that they only guarantee double occupancy... after that it's at the discretion of the hotel. See the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ for additional reading/info.

HOTWIRE does allow you to search for up to quad occupancy and that might be a better option for your stay (imo).

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly.

Sorry, but I did not understand what you mean by "you could receive a room with only one bed and no room for a rollaway or cot" (sorry, I am not from US :) ). Does it mean that I could stay in one room with one bed and an extra place to sleeo? If there is a sleeping place for 2 extra people, it is ok. Is it easy to negotiate in the hotel?

Also, I have tried to enter Hotwire. There is a hotel "1-star hotel in Central Park Area" for $ 119. How do I know if there is a private bathroom for it? Should it be a good option? As per room details, the original price is $477.50.

Thanks in advance for you extraordinary help.

No, it means that you are four people, but the hotel room many only accomodate two people... double occupancy is all that is guaranteed by priceline.

I would not recommend a 1* hotel in NYC.

What is your nightly budget for a hotel for this trip?

The problem is that to safely use priceline you would need to bid for two rooms which clearly puts you out of your budget as it would only be $75 per nite per room.

HOTWIRE is an option as they allow you to search for up to quad occupancy, but unfortunately everything it above your budget excpet for the 1* in the Central Park Area... which as noted above i woulld not recommend. Upon seeing this property in my own search, i'd speculate it may be a WooGo property which has a fairly negative repuation, as well as the low 2* TripAdvisor rating confirms that it's probaby not a "nice" place.

Have you found any type of back-up plan or reservation thru conventional methods?

What could be a low price for us to stay there. If necessary, I can spend a little bit more. What do you recommend in this case for Priceline?

Also, there is a 3* option for $ 229 in Hotwire. Could it be a good option.

Sorry for many questions, but I am not from US and this is the first time I use a bidding site for booking a hotel.

Thanks in advance.

My advise is to not use priceline for quad occupancy in NYC.

Also, there is a 3* option for $ 229 in Hotwire. Could it be a good option.

Which zone is it in and what are the amenities that HOTWIRE associates wtih the property?

How old are your kids?

Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Would you consider staying in nearby Jersey City (NJ) for all/part of your stay? There is a PATH Train ($1.50 per ride) which will take you into Manhattan in about 15 minutes. You can often save some money by staying here... but you do lose most of that "i'm in NYC feel".

I'm going with my parents (with no kids). By paying a little bit more we could stay in 2 separated rooms, no problem. So, I could use priceline to get good prices, right? In this case, what is the best strategy to use it?

The 3* hotel in Hotwire in located in Midtown Central.

Thank you again.

Yes, you could then use priceline... but i'm guessing it may cost more than you think it's going to. What would be your maximum budget per room per nite?

The price could reach U$ 120 per room per night. Is is sufficient?

The Hotel Amenities are: Fitness Center / Restaurant(s) / Pool(s) / High-speed Internet Access and it is located in Midtown Central. The price per quad room is $223

Thanks in advance

You $120 budget will not likely be enough for two rooms at the 4* level.

The HOTWIRE hotel amenties above match those of the Holiday Inn Midtown so that would be our best guess. Note that if correct, this property is avaialble directly on the Holiday Inn Website for $199/nite (when searching for 4 adults). If you purchased from HOTWIRE and it is indeed the Holiday Inn, you could apply for their Double the Difference Guarantee which if successful would bring your cost down to about $170/nite (plus taxes and fees). Don't know if you'd want to take a risk in purchasing this or just booking direct for $199 thru the Holiday Inn Website (please use this link if you do book direct)

If you go with the hotwire offer please use this HOTWIRE link to begin any purchases you make.
