hf386 Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Hi,I am currently looking into booking a flight from Boston (BOS) to Cape Town (CPT) leaving Boston 1 August (Wed.) and returning 22 August (Wed.) I have done searches online to check prices with them ranging from 1600-2400 from discounted airline sites and South African Airways for 1800 (including taxes)In your opinion, what would be an appropriate amount to bid on Priceline's "name your price"? I am flexible with the days +-3. Thanks in advance! :)
thereuare Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding! What is the base fare (not including taxes and fees?)How much of a discount on the base fare would you require to make an opaque purchase worthwile? (given that you can't choose the carrier. arrival/departure times, length of layover, etc) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
hf386 Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 The base fare that I found on a discount flight site (cheapoair) was 1745 not including taxes and fees (This just went up this morning)The base fare that I found on the South African Airways homepage was around $2700.I realize that the date of travel is in the very near future, however, many of the online sites (BA, FlySAA, Delta, AA, Cheaptickets, priceline etc.) continue to have tickets available. I would ideally like to not pay more than $1500 including taxes and fees if possible.
hf386 Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 Woops, made a mistake in quoting in my above post.As of last night SAA homepage's base fare was around $1600. This morning I believe I selected different flights, making the base rate go up to $2600...
thereuare Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Too many rates above to follow the difference in taxes, fees, base fare:What is the base fare you're willing to pay to make an opaque purchase worthwhile? (keep in mind that the add-ons, fees and taxes, can differ based upon the city(s) you connect thru and have a layover. I would like to pay $1300 or less for a base rate. How probable would this be to get accepted? Thanks again!
thereuare Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 See this thread on Priceline Airfare Re-Bidding.Using the techniques discussed there, i would enter a 'nearby' city to Boston. Start bidding at $900 and continue to re-bid increasing $25 each bidding opportunity.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
