shpshootr Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I am looking for a room in New York City for the dates of 3/30- 4/01 , preferably on the midtown east or west. I bid for a 4* on priceline and was rejected with bids up to $90 for MTE, MTW, UWS, and UPCPS. I can bid again Monday night. I've never stayed overnight in NY before so could you tell me the quality of the 3* hotels, I really didn't want to spend much more than 80-90 or over 100 including the taxes and fees. We are going there for only 3 days, 2 nights to see the city, maybe a play, etc., but would not want to have it ruined with a bad hotel experience. What is your opinion of approx. cost of a 3* or would it be better to spend the extra $ on the 4*? Any advice you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks.
thereuare Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Welcome to BetterBidding! In NYC the 3* hotels are often very close in price to the 4* hotels. If i were in your shoes i would probably raise my bid amount to $100 and try again for a 4* followed then by tring for a 3*. This is how i would bid it:Select 4* MTE and...Bid $85, if rejected add MTW and...Bid $90, if rejected add UM/CPS and...Bid $95, if rejected add UWS and...Bid $100.If the above fails i would....Select 3* MTW and...Bid $85, if rejected add MTE and...Bid $90, if rejected add UM/CPS and...Bid $95, if rejected add UWS and...Bid $100.NOTE: the Shoreham has last been reported as a 3* in the MTW zone and their standard room can only accomodate one bed... so if you're going with a non-romantic partner and are not favorable to sharing a bed i wouldn't include the MTW zone. This is a risk in many NYC hotels where the rooms are notoriously small, but this hotel is 'known' for one-bed only rooms (on the otherhand, the hotel itself is very nice). If all the above fails i'm guessing it will likely take a $120 bid to be successful at the 4* level and you can decide if you want to go that high or not when it's time to cross that bridge. One other other option is bidding 2.5* MTE at $65. The only known hotel at this rating in the area is the Courtyard by Marriott and it generally gets very good reviews and is a deal at that price. Of course you could be the first to get another hotel in the area, but if i was happy with that hotel i would feel comfortable bidding it... although i wouldn't 'blindly' try for 2.5* hotels in the other zones (so only select MTE if you choose to try this)I saw a 3.5* on Hotwire at $117 which is most likely the Sheraton, so that could be a 'fall-back' option if it's still available and you get desperate.Feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding any of the above and let us know you make out. shpshootr Posted March 24, 2004 Author Report Posted March 24, 2004 Hi,I got an offer accepted for a 4* hotel in Midtown WestNew York Hilton and Towers for 3/30-4/1 for $94 each night plus taxes and charges = total of $222.86. I bid MTE, $85, then added MTW, 90, then added UMCPS, then added UPW, then UPE, and finally added MTS and bid of $94 and got accepted. Thanks for all your help and bidding advice. I called the hotel to request two beds, she said she would request it, but it would depend on the availability on check in. Thanks again, this is a wonderful site full of good information!
