meaganne1 Posted April 21, 2007 Report Posted April 21, 2007 Hi, I've read over the strategies here and I'm about to start bidding on a room for 2 people in either mtw or mte manhattan. I'd like to keep it under 200 per night for a 4 star, and under 150 for a 3 star. My understanding is that rooms are a bit cheaper on the weekend in the summer for nyc. Any thoughts/advice? The last time I used priceline I didn't get that great of a deal as I lowered from 4 star to 3 star and got something for 145 per night that was on Travelocity for 160 (Sheraton). I won't bid that way again though. Thanks!
blindman Posted April 21, 2007 Report Posted April 21, 2007 Welcome to Betterbidding. The Good news. You've come to the right place to get a great PL deal. The Bad news.Theruare is away on vacation until the 27th so board coverage is down to 'helpful' volunteers :) If you don't get a good answer by 27th then 'bump' the thread.Time is on your side :)
Will Posted April 21, 2007 Report Posted April 21, 2007 Well priceline never guarantees a good deal realistically, it takes some research/patience to get a deal. To get a rough idea what opaque rates are like you can check hotwire for your dates although its almost always more than you'll pay on priceline. You can also check the boards historical data for this time last year to see what people have paid for your kind of request before. Of course rates will vary one year to the next but its good for a rough idea. If your starting bidding now you can try a few low ball figures and see if you can get lucky as you have lots of time. If your bidding now I would start around $110-$120 (a very low figure) but as mentioned you have lots of time so may as well maximize your chance for a bargain, also you can try increasing bids in very small increments like $1/$2.
hzeigler4 Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 TheRuare gave me a low ball bidding strategy. I was rejected on all of these but I see no harm in you trying them. If you are rejected go look at my post from last week. Theruare gave me a new stratagy starting bids at $110.Here is the starting strategy he gave me:When bidding 3* in NYC you have one re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3* UM/CPS...Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* MTW...Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* MTE...Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UM/CPS and MTW...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UM/CPS and MTE...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UM/CPS and MTW and MTE...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115.If rejected don't get discouraged as the above is a bit of lowballing... i do have a plan, so if rejected post back and we'll revise to try again in 24 hours.Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
meaganne1 Posted May 16, 2007 Author Report Posted May 16, 2007 Hi, this is what I've tried so far : on 5/11, started with a bid of 125, mtw, 4 star, then rejected, added mte and bid 130, rejected. closed browser and bid 135 4 star mtw, then it said i already made that request and didn't go through.on 5/15, tried a bid of 140 for mtw, rejected, tried 150 for mtw and mte.Should I keep going higher? I want to keep it under 200 for a 4 star, under 150 for a 3 star. Dates July 10-13.Thanks!
thereuare Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Do you prefer spending more for a 4* hotel or less for a lower rated 3* hotel (ie- if given the choice of a 3* for $150 or a 4* for $200 which would you choose?) meaganne1 Posted May 16, 2007 Author Report Posted May 16, 2007 Hi, I think I would go to 200 for a four star, although one concern I have is if the four stars on priceline really are 4 star. I guess I'll keep bidding higher every 24 hours up to 200.
thereuare Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 I would wait for a bidding strategy as your bidding above really isn't systematic. We will suggest a strategy for your to follow, but first i'd take a look at the Priceline Hotel List and make sure you're comfortable with all of the reported 4* properties in the zones you're willing to bid.Let us know if you're "ok" with the hotels reported thus far (as you could be the first to report a new property) and if so we'll then suggest a strategy to follow. meaganne1 Posted May 16, 2007 Author Report Posted May 16, 2007 ok, thanks! i am ok with the 4* hotels in mtw, mte, and mts. (stayed at the sheraton before in middtown and it was more like a 3 star though, i see it's been moved to a 4*)
meaganne1 Posted May 18, 2007 Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 ok, going to start bidding again, any suggestion before i do?edit: i just bid 170 mtw, rejected, then 180 mtw and mte, rejected. i wonder if there is something going on that week because others got lower prices the week before.
thereuare Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Was that for 3* or 4* bidding? Is there a reason you're avoiding the UM/CPS zone (as we often see quite a few 3* acceptances in that zone)Why not book the Beekman Tower which has a Studio Suite for $175/nite... no booking fee so even less than you've already bid above and the reviews are very good. Will that work for your plans? meaganne1 Posted May 21, 2007 Author Report Posted May 21, 2007 thanks thereuare, that was for 4* bidding; the beekman tower will be a good backup but i was hoping to get a 4*; i'll try again.
