Hotwire Hotel: 4* PR (Rio Grande-Humacao) Wyndham El Conquistador

I'll be in Puerto Rico from 3/17-3/22. I have 2 free nights with points at the Holiday Inn Express for 3/17 and 3/21. The other 3 nights I am paying $129.00. I know nothing about the hotel and am afraid I won't like it. Anyway, Hotwire shows a 3.5 star for 132.00 for 3/18-3/21 which I'm assuming is the Wyndham Condado. Since it is not much more than the Holiday Inn, I am thinking of going for it. But I'm wondering if I should try and bid thru PL for a resort level and if you can guide me as to what bid might be accepted - would up to $130 do it?

I am also confused about resort fees and taxes. Is the issue I saw on another post that the hotel charged the tax even though it was included in the prepaid Hotwire/PL amount? I thought the prepaid amount included all taxes, so I just want to make sure another tax isn't charged when I get there.

I'm also not clear as to how 'inventory' works. I'd like to try PL to get something lower than the 132.00, but since I want to bid resort, I'll have to wait 72 hours. I'm afraid if I do that, the 3.5 star will be gone on Hotwire.

If PL gives a counterbid, do I have to wait 72 hours?

Thanks in advance! This is a great forum.

The Wyndham Condado Plaza comes up a lot on Hotwire, but there is also the 3.5* Wyndham Old San Juan that has similar, but different, amenities. If you list the amenities we can confirm them against our HOTWIRE HOTEL LIST and determine the most probable property.

You are correct that Priceline/Hotwire totals include taxes, however there was an issue with one property where they didn't know what they were doing and thought they were supposed to charge the taxes directly to the guest. This occurred over a period of a few weeks and as far as i know this has been cleared up as i haven't heard of it happening since then. Even if it does occur it's easy to clear this up, so i wouldn't let this be a concern. Some hotels also charge resort fees, and these would be payable by you at the hotel (i don't think the Wyndham Condado charges a resort fee, the nearby Caribe Hilton charges ~$4/nite).

Counter-offers are a one shot deal and you either agree to bid the amount Priceline suggests or you have to wait the alloted time. They're explained in a bit more detail here: COUNTER-OFFERS

Why do you have to wait 72 hours to bid, have you recently bid this and been turned down? If so, please provide the price you offered as it will help us in a current strategy for you. Let us know and we'll advise further.

At the time of my post, I had not yet bid. I was hoping to get something less than the $132, maybe the Hilton. But now I realize that PL has the Wyndham Condado as Resort, so I might end up with that anyway. I have since bid $85.00 for Resort and it was rejected. My question was whether I should continue to try PL and for how long, what are the chances that the Wyndham on Hotwire will no longer be available if I wait, or will prices go down or more options be available on Hotwire if I continue waiting until closer to my dates. Thanks.

Well you just touched upon most of the risks....

-Hotwire no longer offers the Wyndham

-price goes up

-another property becomes avaialble

... and you said you were new to this :)

Given that we just saw lars32 bid almost the indentical dates in this thread: Priceline San Juan and get rejected at $125 and accepted at $130, i think that you might have similar results.

You might therefore be able to save a $10 or so by waiting and trying Priceline again in 72 hours... but then the risk is that Hotwire no longer offers this property. Given the alternative if this property disappears is much higher rates (or the same rate at the lower quality hotel you already have booked) i would just take the Hotwire offering. To save $10-$15 isn't worth the risk.

Of course this assumes you want to stay at the Wyndham Condado. I just booked my cousin there so personally i have no problems with it... we have both stayed at this hotel 10+ years ago but haven't been recently.

Those are my thoughts, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Thanks for your prompt replies. I think you are right and that I should just go for it. The Wyndham has to be better than the Holiday Inn Express, and for not much more $, right? The only drawback is that I need to change hotels. Do you know anything about the Holiday Inn?

Hi,

I need some more help. Another hotel that came up is in Rio Grande/Humecao for $130 for 3/18-3/21. It is Resort/4*. Somewhere I read what the amenities are for Wyndham El Conquistidor vs. Westin. I checked thru Hotwire packages to verify the amenities. The only difference between the 2 is that the Westin has an "airport shuttle" amenity. The one that came up on my request did not have it, so I'm thinking now it is the Wyndham El C. I am thinking this because amenities are: Casino, Oceanfront, Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Bus. Center, Golf nearby, Tennis nearby, Spa, Laundry. But it seems the amenities are different in the packages? In the package, Wyndham El C. showed as: Beach Access, Beachfront, Casino, Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Business Center, Golf, Tennis, Spa, Laundry. In packages, Westin showed as Resort, Beach Access, Beachfront, Casino, Shuttle, Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Bus Center, Golf, Tennis.

I guess it doesn't matter, but my preference is the Westin, but I think that would show as 'Customer Favorite' and 4.5/Resort? Whadya think?

Thanks Again.

I wouldn't read into a "Customer Favorite" meaning that it's a 'better' hotel; it's more marketing related.

The last known information is that the Westin is a 4.5* so i don't think the 4* you are seeing is the Westin.... and that is a bigger distinction than the shuttle amenity.

The known information on what describes each hotel is here: HOTWIRE HOTEL LISTS PUERTO RICO (read beyond the first post as there are more hotels in subsequent replies)

Are you renting a car, because the two zones you're looking at are not that close to each other and a cab can get very expensive.

Just to clarify - I just stayed at the Wyndham Condado on 3/6/04, and yes, they did charge a resort fee of 11% ( I don't know what number the percentage was done on, but it came to $12.45) This was over and above hotwire fees and taxes. They also tried to double charge me for the original tax, which I had paid through Hotwire. They took it off readily, once it was brought to their attention. Just pay attention to what they charge you extra for.
