xebtron Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 My wife, infant daughter and I will be in Boston for a vacation between 12 and 16 June and are looking for discount accommodations. We don't have specific plans, but would like to be close enough to tourist sites to walk and use public transportation. The last time I was in Boston I stayed at a Boston U. youth hostel in Back Bay and liked the area.Order of preferences for this trip would be:CopleyDowntownBoston WaterfrontI would like to find a room for less than $100-a-night, but would be willing to go up to $137. Any ideas on the appropriate strategy for a successful outcome would be greatly appreciated.
thereuare Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding! What is more important... price or zone preference? In other words, would you prefer to go up to your maximum bid in the Copley zone before trying for the other zones OR would you prefer the least expensive 3* or better hotel in any of the three zones you've selected?Let us know and we'll suggest a strategy to follow. xebtron Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 Thanks for the prompt reply -- I did some lurking earlier and enjoyed the many wonderful tips.Price is the most important factor -- it's been awhile since I visited Boston, but if I recall correctly, it was a city easily traversed by walking or public transport.
thereuare Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 You have three re-bid zones when bidding 3* in Boston. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3* Copley...Bid $50, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $55, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $60, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $65, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* Downtown...Bid $50, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $55, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $60, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $65, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* Waterfront...Bid $50, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $55, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $60, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $65, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* Copley and Downtown...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $75, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* Copley and Waterfront...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $75, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* Copley and Downtown and Waterfront...Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. xebtron Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 I just went through the strategy as outlined, and unfortunately, was not successful in any of my bids.Any thoughts on what to do now? Would lowering the amount of days I'm looking for and/or splitting the trip make it easier to find something? I'll be in MA for a wedding, so I'm flexible. The original plan was to stay in Boston from 06/12-06/15 if that would make it easier to find something.
thereuare Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Would you want to shorten your stay and/or split your bid before going up to your $137 limit? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
xebtron Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 My original plan was to stay in Boston until 15 June, and then travel elsewhere, so that remains an option. I'm also not opposed to splitting the travel dates if it results in a lower overall cost. Otherwise, I'm willing to spend up the $137 limit. My dates of travel are still a couple of months away; is it possible that the original strategy would work if I keep trying over the next several days/weeks?
thereuare Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Sure you could wait it out a few weeks still and continue to try with the previous strategy above... but i would suggest finding a cancellable back-up in the meantime just in case prices go up instead of down :)Keep us updated. xebtron Posted April 19, 2007 Author Report Posted April 19, 2007 UPDATE: I continued trying to bid on hotels in the three areas, reaching my $137 limit. Despite repeated attempts, I was unsuccessful. Afraid that prices would rise and I would be left without a room, I decided to look on Orbitz. There I found a room at the Shawmut Inn in downtown Boston for $119 a night -- total with taxes and fees, minus a $50 coupon (using MEGA50 as code), I reserved a room for $506.32 for four nights. ($126.58 a night total)Next stop on the vacation is Hadley, MA for a wedding, and then departing from Bradley Airport in CT. May need some suggestions on hotels in those areas, so might open new thread. Also, any suggestions on getting a low price on renting a car from Boston on the 16th of June for three days, with plans to drop off at Bradley Airport in Hartford?Cheers.
