HJ911 Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 I am brand new to this so please forgive me if I seem TOTALLY lost.My girlfriend and I are a couple of broke college students who are looking to go to New York for our anniversary. We figured we'd splurge a little at the beginning of the summer, and then work our tails off during the rest of the summer to pay for this trip. We have a budget together of about $2000 (been SAVING, SAVING, SAVING).We've been planning this trip for some time now and the best deals within our budget are not what we are really looking for. We've found a Holiday Inn (in Queens) for about $500 (which includes airfare) per person. I'm not entirely too happy with this hotel/motel and would love to find a nice hotel on the actual island of Manhattan. The commute from Queens to Manhattan is one thing that is really bothering me. The closest subway station is about a 15-20 minute walk from the hotel (in a somewhat rough area from the things I've read). I plan on walking a lot during this trip but would love to stay on Manhattan and not let worries such as that bother me.There's a few other things that are a factor concerning my stay with the Holiday Inn, but after reading numerous posts on this site, I would love to try the Priceline deal. I'm kind of skeptic seeing how you do not know what hotel you will be in until you are charged, but, if people are getting 3* or 4* hotels for $100-$120 a night, I'm willing to play the game. Here's what I'm looking for - (All of these locations were taken from a guide off of Orbitz. If anyone can help with location suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.)MIDTOWN WESTMIDTOWN EASTLOWER MANHATTANUPPER WEST SIDEMIDTOWN SOUTHUPPER EAST SIDE$80 - $120 A NIGHTAny suggestions for a broke, college couple?
thereuare Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding! Are your dates firm? Any chance you could postpone your anniversary trip a couple of months until the summer when hotel rates get much cheaper? If you can't change dates, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? I don't think it will help much, but it may give you other options than staying in Queens, which i would not recommend. HJ911 Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 The dates are pretty firm due to our anniversary and the fact of having to work all summer before school starts again. Our jobs aren't that flexible in letting us take off later in the summer, so we figured we'd do it at the beginning of summer break to get it out of the way and be able to work for the rest of the summer.I guess we can split the bids. Whatever helps. Thanks a bunch.
thereuare Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 My thought to splitting the bid was that what is believed to be the Candlewood Suites is available on HOTWIRE for $125/nite the last 2 nites of your stay... but this would still leave you with difficulty for your first two nites. You can probably get something for your complete stay in nearby Secaucus (NJ) and i would take this over any Queens option, but you're then looking at a bus ride into the city (last return may be at 1am-2am or so... although a train option may be available.Although less than ideal, you may also want to consider The Pod Hotel which has a shared bath/bunk bed room for $131/nite. Rooms are small but it's recently renovated, had a great location, and has received good reviews. (this is also cancellable up until a few days before your stay, so you could use this is a back-up while you continue to look for something better, but unfortunately $100 doesn't go too far in NYC this time of year)I think the above represents your best options at the current time. I'm very familiar with this area so feel free to ask any questions regarding any of the above.Let us know your thoughts. HJ911 Posted March 28, 2007 Author Report Posted March 28, 2007 I really appreciate the game plan you've made for me. Looks like it took some time.Unfortunately, I will have to try it tomorrow night. I've already used up all of my opportunities tonight on Priceline - was still trying to figure out the system. Thanks again.
