Arista Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Last night I bid for a 4* in Manhattan, starting out with a couple of zones at $95 and adding $5 with each subsequent bid with additional zones (except Lower Manhattan). Got up to $118 without success. Today I tried for a 3* and went up to $120, again excluding LM, but nothing. Ended up direct booking a hotel in Jersey City. All the hotel booking websites showed extremely low availablity. I don't know if this was due to Valentine's Day or President's Day weekend, or both.
thereuare Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Most likely a combination of both holidays... lots of people using the opportunity to get away for the weekend or just 'vacation locally' (my wife and i even considered getting a hotel room for the weekend, either in NYC or JC, just for a change of scenary and to be a tourist in our own neighborhood).Did you try bidding for Jersey City at all? Also, don't rule out Hotwire. If your JC reservation is still cancellable there are many mid-town NYC options within your price range (and you can probably figure out the actual hotel before purchasing...we can help if this is an option for you). I'm showing 3* starting at $103, a few 3.5* options $99-$106, and a 4* at $106.Now i'm curious because the above Hotwire rates don't seem high at all!Where in JC did you end up booking? (just wondering since it's right in my backyard) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Arista Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 I didn't try bidding for Jersey City because I wanted to be as close as possible to a PATH station and didn't trust a blind bid. I ended up at the Doubletree by the Pavonia/Newport station.I did check Hotwire, several times, and came up with nothing lower than $288. How on earth did you get $103?
thereuare Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Is your stay just one nite, 2/13-2/14 or were you trying for 2 nites (2/13-15).There is plenty of avaialbility for the one nite of the 13th, but there is virutailly nothing for the nite of the 14th.Is that the difference? Arista Posted February 10, 2004 Author Report Posted February 10, 2004 Yes, that's the difference. I need both nights, the 13th and the 14th. It's Valentine's Day that killed me. :)
