Priceline Hotel: Suggestions for San Francisco with teen

I am planning a 4-5 day trip to San Franciso for spsring break with my 15 year old son and would appreciate some suggestions of hotels in the downtown area. More interested in safe, comfortable and clean than business amenities, fine dining lounge. We will be doing the usual tourist stuff...wharf, Chinatown, etc so access to transportation or safe walking is important. 3-4 * range? This will be my son's first trip to SF and I have not been in some time so any suggestions would be helpful
