gdub Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 What's up all,This is my very first post so please let me know if I am missing any info an etc. I'm going to be in NYC from 3/15 - 3/19 and I'm looking at a 4* hotel in Soho, or Midtown West. I have already placed first offers for $120 that was rejected for both zones. Any advice on how I should strategize this would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time using Priceline. Thanks so much. I really appreciate all the help.
thereuare Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 Your budget is probaby not going to be enough for these dates. As well... do you have reason to be in the Downtown zone (which containes the SoHo area)? Staying there is not typically the best location for the average tourist looking to 'explore' the city. gdub Posted January 30, 2007 Author Report Posted January 30, 2007 I'm just looking to stay close to popular places. I chose Soho cause my friends and I will probably be spending most of time in that area. I chose my budget because the last time I went, my gf booked the Hilton - Ave. Amer. for $120 a night. I wanted to raise it a little because I know that is Spring Break weekend. What would you suggest?
thereuare Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 What year and month was your prior trip? This is also St. Patricks Day weekend and there is a not-so-small parade that takes place in the city. gdub Posted January 30, 2007 Author Report Posted January 30, 2007 I went January 8-13 in 2006. I didn't realize about St. Patricks day. What price range would you suggest i start out with?
thereuare Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Besides this being St. Patricks Day, you're also comparing this stay to prices from winter a year ago. The hotel market has gotten steadily stronger over the last few years, so prices last year aren't necessarily applicable to the current market. As well, winter is a slow period in NYC, so rates are typically lower in the winter than they are during Spring (which your current stay above hits the beginning of).THIS USER has dates which overlap yours (your stay begins one day earlier) and the best we've been able to come up with is the Eastgate Tower for $195/nite booked thru Quickbook.Have you found anything better than that for these dates. gdub Posted February 1, 2007 Author Report Posted February 1, 2007 I haven't found anything else that's cheaper. A friend suggested to wait another 2 weeks before booking and I might catch a cheaper deal. I know it is all by chance but is this mostly true?I decided to up my bid to $160, everything less has been rejected.
AaronJB Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 If you go to the Affinia Manhattan website (affinia.com, but search for the Affinia Manhattan once you get there) and enter in the promo code (be sure to enter in the code when you search for availability) TVZ07W, these dates would be $159 a night. That would be a good backup reservation to have as you continue to try and see if you could get something via Hotwire or Priceline for cheaper.
gdub Posted February 1, 2007 Author Report Posted February 1, 2007 I appreciate the info Aaron. Have you stayed here before? How is the place - inside and location wise? Thanks again.
AaronJB Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I haven't stayed there myself, but it does get very good (one or two negatives, but the majority are very positive) reviews (4.5/5* review average, which seems pretty rare for NYC hotels) on tripadvisor.com The location is also across (or near) Penn Station if you are taking the train in from Newark or elsewhere. Madison Square Garden is also right there. Location is fine; very reasonable walking distance to a lot of sights. As backups go, I'd certainly feel good about that if I was going to NYC and didn't manage to get anything else. Additionally, at least with the Affinia you'd get more space and you'd have a kitchen if you wanted to load up on food so if you didn't feel like going out one night you'd be all set (or leftovers if you did go out and bring food back, etc.)I think there's a large Whole Foods right around there in terms of groceries. You could get prepared meals there to take back.Just make sure you enter in the code and also, read the fine print about cancelation policy (I believe it's cancelable although it's best that you double check the fine print.)Again, if you don't get anything else, I think the Affinia would be a very good backup to have, especially given that the Affinia's regular rate for those dates is quite a bit higher than the rate with the coupon code.
gdub Posted February 2, 2007 Author Report Posted February 2, 2007 Aaron, when does this code expire? Thanks
gdub Posted February 15, 2007 Author Report Posted February 15, 2007 Hey guys,I decided to wait a couple of weeks to see if I could get a deal closer to my travel date but no such luck. I tried booking the Affinia Manhattan, and the Beekman but the rates were higher than what I read here on the forum. Just wondering if there are any other deals out there or if maybe I'm trying to book these from the wrong links.(I'm using the links that you guys are providing her ein the forum). This is probably a little late but my travel group is a bunch of procrastinators and again I have to take initiative and take care of everything. Thanks for your help in advance. The site is really helpful.
thereuare Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread. What were your last bids (star rating, zones, and highest bid amount)? Is there any back-up reservation made? If not successful with the opaque suppliers up to $160... where will you stay (and how much)? gdub Posted February 15, 2007 Author Report Posted February 15, 2007 Sorry about that. Our back up is basically our friend's apartments since we have many friends living in NYC, but not all in the same area. The reason we want a hotel is so our whole group can be together rather than splitting up. My tries yesterday were for $160 4* midtown east - rejected$160 4* + midown west - rejected$165 4* + midown south - rejected.I'm cool with 3* now since we're runnign short on time. What price would you suggest I start bidding with for 3*?I think the Affinia Manhattan deal was a really good deal and I made the mistake of waiting. Any chance of this deal comming back?
thereuare Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 I'd doubt you'll see the Affinia deal(s) come back as they were based capicity controlled.Just to clarify, you have not tried any 3* bids for these dates yet, correct?I've also noticed that you haven't included UM/CPS in your bidding... as this zone is usually fine for the typical tourist, is there a reason your avoiding that area? What is your maximum bid for a 3 star? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
AaronJB Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 The Affinia special only has a limited inventory for the dates included and there appears to be no more inventory for your dates - I just tried it to see if it would come up.
gdub Posted February 15, 2007 Author Report Posted February 15, 2007 My max for 3* is 150. I think this would be fairly reasonable to get a good hotel? What do you think?I have not tried UM or CPS because ME MW and MS will be closer to where well be and our friend's apts. If you think this will significantly increase my chances of landing a hotel, I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks.
thereuare Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 My max for 3* is 150. I think this would be fairly reasonable to get a good hotel? What do you think? It's possible, but i don't think it's as easy as you think it's going to be.If you're willing to add UM/CPS (and i think you should, imo) as we often see 3* acceptances in this area, transportation is cheap and readily available, and it also increases your bidding opportunities. gdub Posted May 18, 2007 Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 Ended up paying $250 per night because none of the costs worked and time was winding down. Ended up at the Hyatt and it was very nice. Cost wasn't tha bad, since 5 of us stayed in the same room and split the cost equally.
thereuare Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Did you win the Hyatt via Priceline or did you book directly with the HYATT website? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
